Mr. Marshall has not severed his connections with the telephone company, and for this rea son he will place the cigar store, if he buys it, under the management of Perry Foster, who has had experience in that line under lenning and Kent. Ho .will also retain Kelly Jones as a clerk. Both Mr. Denning and Mr. Kent will engage in the livestock business. Mr. Denning will probably locate In the vicinity of Missoula, Mont., as he was greatly pleased with that country while there at the land registration a few weeks ago. Because Governor Refused to Tempt Statement 1 Men to Violate : , Campaign Pledges. ' ' Portland (Or.) Telegram: Until Frank W. Benson, who now occupies the positions of governor and secre tary of state, announced that In the coming election he would be an aspir ant for secretary instead of gover nor, the old-line politicians kept their designs under cover, although a few threats had leaked out since the leg islature adjourned. Once the gov ernor outlined his policy, there came a new alignment of the political sit uation of the utatu, for it changed the plans of various ambitious men who look for gubernatorial honors. Also it had Its elToct on three or four men who entertained the iden ot succeeding Benson as secretary of state, had he elected to make the race for governor. Here is the grievance entertained against Benson: During the legisla ture when an organized effort wus being made to prevent the eloctlon of Chamberlain as senator, certain of the men who were conspiring to over throw the result1 of the direct prim ary by defeating Chamborlnln, sought the assistance and co-operation of Secretary of State Benson, The old-line politicians presumed thnt Benson would enter Into their game with avidity and endeavor to tonipt Statement 1 members of the Senate and House to violate their pledgee. Benson declined to participate In tho plan. Great pressure was brought on many of the Republicans who had subscribed to Statement No. 1, but Benson and other state ofllclals kept their hands off. Because he refused to Join In the plan, Benson Is lo be punished, if the politicians, can accomplish this end. They whisper thnt had ho assisted. Chamberlain might have been defeat ed, but that the reason Benson ro fused wns because the election of Chamberlain to the senate would promote Benson to the governorship. Even after Benson becnnie govoruor, the politicians besought him to "play the game" and nsked him to dis charge state employes who were given their positions through Cham berlain. This proposition Benson al so refused to consider, explaining that he safr no .reason why tho ax should be swung on the olllclid heads of efficient employes, just be cause his predecessor had secured the appointments. It Is known that during the cam paign Benson did support II. M. Cake, Republican, as against Chnm berlain, Democrat, and even went to his home county, of Douglas and worked for Cake. Douglas had al ways been a stronghold of Chnni berlaln, but Benson's industry caus ed the county to split even, Cnko and Chamberlain receiving the same vote. All those would not help swing Statement No. I men from their pledge are iu tho blacklist of the old-line politicians, and as llousou has announced himself as a candi date' to Bucceed himself as secretary of state, the politicians will try to make an example of htm. Another thing which Is not Increas ing Benson's stock with tho old-style politicians Is thnt whllo In California he gave out an Interview stating that the direct primary Ib a good law.
