recited to Circuit Judge Cleland the
tale of her marital difficulties with
Charles Jones, to whom she was mar
ried In Salt Lake, Utah, In 1905. She
charged him with cruelty.
"Once he bit me with a stick of
wood, and then at the breakfast
table he slapped me In the face until
my nose bled, she declared vehem
ently.
Evelyn Virginia Hunter, the 13
year-old daughter of Mrs. Jones, cor
rected her mother's testimony.
"He hit her with a curtain pole,'
averred Evelyn.
The little girl also testified tbs
Jones had beaten her with a horse-
whp. She admitted she cried. "It
hurt," said Evelyn.
Mrs. Jones, who Is proprietor of a
rooming bouse at 352 second street
was allowed $f00 alimony. Jones
runs a saloon at the corner of Clay

his former wife.
One of tho incidents of the hear
ing of the Jones case was the plea of
little Vlrglna Hunter as she stepped
from the witness stand. Addressing
Judge Cleland, she said:
"Please, can 1 have my bull dog?

But because the dog was not con
cerned in the divorce suit, the Judge
had no power to restore It to the
hUd, Mrs. Jones' attorney, John
H. 8tevenson, hastily interposed, and
assured the child that the question
as to the dog would be taken ui
later.
Mrs. Jones said that her husband
was arrested and sentenced to the
county jail for Belling liquor In
Douglas county without a llconse.

dence to Justify their act. but the
Justice ruled It out as an Illegal
measure.

run a line for a proposed electric
route from Oakland, Douglas County.
The local corporation which Is
promoting a road from Coos Hay to
Bolso has surveyors In the fleld and
expects to complete the preliminary
survey to Roseburg before the ralnv
weather begins. Local people are
hopeful that at least one of the roads
will materialize soon.
