ANNAPOLIS, Md., Aug. 7. It if
understood today that a charge of
murder has been placed against one
of the officers who took part, in the
brawl which resulted In the death of
Lieut. Sutton. Up to the present
time all officers have virtually been
co-defendants In the investigation
without any specific charge against
them. The court of inquiry held a
secret session this morning to hear
the letters written by Sutton's moth
er to the authorities at Annapolis.
In one of these, it is said, the mother
makes grave charges against the of
ficers at the academy.

timony, to show that Thaw is a con
firmed paranoiac. He referred to

TACOMA, Wash., Aug. 7. Two
masked men held up and robbed an
auto party of two men nnd two wo

sing street car and calmly relieved

point of the revolver. Ordering the
motorman to move on. the robbers
then ousted the auto party and rode

at Oak Creek, 12 miles east of this
city this morning, when Charles
Hendrickson, aged nbout 25 years,
shot and almost instantly killed Miss
Iba Erickson, aged about 20 years,

This awful deed was done at the
home of the young lady's father,
ChfiF. Erickson. about 7:30 o'clock,
,isf after her father nnd her oldest
brother. Otto Erickson, had gone out
into the harvest field to work. 'Her
iir'her being dead, she was the
family housekeeper, and with her
were h"r younger sisler, Lena, aged
bout 1S, and little brother, Johnny,
aged 9. When the shooting occ
urred, Miss Tgi was nlone In the
house, her sister was sitting on the
Itfhen porch and the boy wns not
far from the door steps.
It .ippenrs that Hendrickson, who
is a cousin of the girl be slew,
had hired a horse and buggy In
Wosburg on Friday nnd drove out to
Oak Creek and probably as far as
Glide, returning to town In the
evening. He then walked back to
Oak Creek aud this morning nppear-
d at the Erickson home just after
the men of the family had departed
for their day's work in the field.
What, words passed between the two
parties to the tragedy Is unknown,
as they were alone In the house to
gether. A few minutes nfter his
arrival, the sister nnd little brother
were startled by a pistol shot and
when the former. Miss Lenn, rushed
into the house she found her sister
lying on the floor with a terrible
wound just below her heart. She
was unable to tell what had occurred
and died In less than half an hour.
Hendrickson walked out back of
the house to ati open space about
200 yards away and ended his own
life a few minutes later by shoot
ing himself just below the heart, this
being In the same spot that he
had shot the girl nnd with the same
weapon.
Motive for the tragedy Is said tot
be unrequited love. He wished to)
marry Miss Erickson but this her j
father bitterly opposed. It is pre-'
sumed that she had acain refused ;
his attentions when he fired the fatal
shot. Then, filled with remorse, he
quickly ended his own life. !
Hendrickson Is of Swedish descent
and bad been in that neighborhood
at intervals for three or four years
past, but left there early In last :
winter and had not been seen again j
until In the past day or two. The
Erickson family are very highly ea-
teemed people, while Hendrickson
is Said to have been rather disso
lute and a "booze fighter."
Immediately upon receiving the
report of the girl beine killed. Sher
iff Fenton and Marshal Huffman left
fr,r Oak Creek in search of the mur
derer. Before they had been gone
from town 30 minutes the news was
received here that Hendrickson had
also slain himself, thus making their
mission useless.
H. D. Engels. who came In from
Peel this morning, believes be saw
Hendrickson and two girls at a fun
eral at Glide on Friday, but whether
these were the Erickson sisters he
does not know. The younger sister
was so prostrated over the tragedy
that she was unable to give any defi
nite account of it to the neighlmra
who had assembled, even before the
stricken girt had breathed her las'

LATER Just before suiciding,
Hendrickson wrote a letter addressed
to Otto Erickson, his victim's broth
er. It is In Swedish, and In It Hen
drickson says he loved Iga, could not
live without her and decided to tnke
her with htm to the next world. He
says also that he threw away $ 1 Ti 0
before shooting himself. A search
was made for the money, but It could
not be found.
Hendrickson and the girl were en
gaged to bo married when he lef.t
Onk Creek last winter. During his
absence, however, the girl decided to
break the engagement, and when
Hendrickson drove out to her home
yesterday she handed htm a ring, also
a watch which ho had given her.
Otto Erickson would not tell the
full contents of the letter, written
by the murderer, bo Sheriff Fenton

tion nnd brought It to Roseburg this
afternoon for a complete transla

rumors of the extension of the For
est Grove branch westward toward
the coast, but plans In that direc
tion have not reached the stage that
those for the Southern Oregon ex
tension have attained. It Is consid
ered highly probable that the Salem
lino will be extended to Albany at.
least during the coming year.
