The statement follows: "I have signed the Payne tariff bill because I believe It to be the result of einrera effort on the part of the republican party to make a downward revision and to comply with the promises of the platform a they have been generally understood and as I Interpreted thorn In the campaign. "This Is not a perfect tariff bill or a complete compliance with the promises made, etrlctly Interpreted but a fulfillment free from criticism In respect to a subject matter Involv Ing many schedules und thousands of articles could not be expected. Akers, probably the oldest resident of Douglas County, celebrat ed his yGth birthday In Koseburg last Sunday, August 1, by writing a few stanzas of poetry, quite an Intellect ual feat for a man who bus almost readied the century mark of life. That he also possesses a remarkably steady nerve for ono so old Is at tested by the fuel that Mr. Akers still shaves himself without any trou ble. He walks about town nlmost dally, giving personal attention to his affairs, and reads tho newspapers regularly, using Ills eyeglasses only for fine print. Mr. Akers 1b a native of Kentucky, a state that is noted for the hardi hood and longevity of Its sons and daughters. He was a atcambout pilot on the Mississippi river during ante bellum dnys, and In 1849 crossed the plains with an ox-team, settling In this state.
