Misses twra and Lulu McAllister, two young women who are pioneering on home steads in the wilds of Ixuglas coun ty, near Rlkton, have sent to a local taxiderniKt the pelt of a mjooater panther which they killed one day fast week lo an exciting fight with the beast. Several months ago the two young women, whose home was formerly at Heod, decided to take up homesteads They selected their claims and built ! cabins on them about half a mile apart. The woods in that neighbor hood are frequented by panther, bear a-fid deer, and the young women pur chased two 32 special Winchesters for protection. They have become expert rlne shots. One morning last week, while Miss Dora was walking from her cabin to her sister's cabin, she came face to fa;e with a large panther. The animal swished his tall, threw up bis back and began to scratch the earth -Ith his claws and act ugly. Mlas Dora became frightened. She did not like the prospects of ad vancing upon the animal without any weapon to defend herself, and she did the very worst thing she could. Instead of facing the animal, which would have caused It to run, she be gan to back away, and the animal stealthily followed her for a distance and then slunk away Into the under growth. She then hastened to the hon&e and with her sister and their two dogs, one a kye terrier and the other a fox terrier, set out to bag the animal. The two diminutive dogs soon took the trail and In a few min utes Mr. Panther was In a tree. Roth girls took aim and fired wirnultan eously, and down came Mr. Panther, but he was only wounded. The ani mal paid no heed to the yelping dogs, and started over logs and rocks for the young women. Another shot was fired at the advancing panther, but he still continued to come, and when within a few feet of where the two stood, Mlas Dora sent a bullet through the brain of the varmint, killing htm instantly, Tho girls dragged the animal to the nearest cabin, skMined him, boxed tho pelt and sent it to their brother in this city, who has placed It In the hands of a taxldermlnt for mount ing. How Harry Thaw conducted hitnseif at Matteavan asylum was the phase of bis life gone eoto today by r. Amos Baker, first assistant phy&ician of the asylum, the oniy witness caiied by District Attorney Jerome today. Baker read from an asylum record which stated that Thaw acted in a "silly manner" when brought to the asylum. The record. went on to say that he admitted that evidence offer ed at his trial showed him to be In sane, but be says that the district auorcey was not hi possession of the facts in the esse. "He greets one in a silly and pompous manner." Thaw toid Baker that the "pervert ed practices" were no more evidence of Insanity than taking a cordial af ter dinner. Baker prose n ted 35 newspaper clippings found in Thaw's pockets, nearly all of which, accord ing to Jerome, related to sexual mat ters. At the conclusion of his di rect examination, Baker declared Thaw trrationai at the present time. Green, a retired saloonkeeper, was temporarily passed today as the sec ond Juror lo try President Patrick Calhoun, of the United Railroads, on a charge of bribery.
