O'Brien, of the Harrlman linos In the Northwest, direct from the San Francisco office late yesterday af ternoon, that the contract for the first 25 miles In the extension of the Ore gon Eastern Railroad south of Natron toward Klamath Falls, which event ually will be bullion to that city and will become the main line of th Southern Pacific to California, has been awarded to the Utah Construc tion Company, and that construction will be begun at once. This announcement marks the be ginning of actual work on the most Important bit of railroad building in Oregon, with the exception of the Deschutes line to the central part or the state, that has been under taken In several years. It Is only the nrst part or an extension of 34.24 miles of track to bo built southeast- wardly from Natron this year, and of 25.24 miles of track northeastorlv from Klnmath FallB toward Natron, total of 09.4 8 miles, nliuis for which wore mnde by the Harrlman people last spring. Tho remaining 139.12 miles separating the two cities expected to be built next year, as tho present work will probably ex haust Wils year's appropriation for onstruetlon purposes. The contract lust awarded Involves about tl,2fi0,000, as It Is estimated that the entire 59.48 miles will cost In the neighborhood of 12.225.000. R. & N. train and arreBted here Saturday, es caped last night from Sheriff Levi Cbrlsman's borne during -the officer's absence. Officers f surrounding towns were notified to watch out for her, but so far as known she has not been apprehended. The sheriff was called to Tyuli Val ley yesterday and left his charge In the care of his housekeeper. The girl was to sleep In a tent In 4he yard with the housekeeper, and short ly after retiring made an excuse for returning to the house. Becoming alarmed at ber prolonged absence, a search was instituted and it was dis covered she had made gool her es cape. It Is thought .she boarded an eastbound tralii. The runaway girl had a ticket to La Grande and seem ed to be well supplied with money. DIED. HOOVER At Olalla, July 31, 1909, Mrs. E. J. Hoover, aged 78 years and 6 months. Born In Indiana In 1831, Mrr. Hoover crossed the plains in 18f-i' and located In California. Fifteen years lator she moved to this couu'.y, tc-ttllng at Olalla, where she resiled continuously up to the time of her demise. Five daughters and one son sur vive Mrs. Hoover. For years and years Harlrman has neglected this territory, openly sneered at its trade, milked It regularly with becoming dignity, soft-soaped It with repeated Insincere promises of a railroad, and otherwise encouraged Immigration and settlement with advertising and assurances the latter of which he has not intended nor does not now Intend to keep. He has never built a branch or spur line In the state of Oregon, but always quietly absorbed those which had been built by other well meaning but evidently "green" hands at the railroad game. Now his saw has struck a nail. The Invader, whoever he may be, means business, and Harriman does not. The people up here do not censure Mr. Harrlman for not building the Deschutes road. But -the people do blame him for repeatedly promising to build and just as repeatedly for getting the promise; they blame him for not extending either the Colum bia Southern, or Corvallis & Eastern, the termini of which are practically at our threshold now; they blame him for his policy of Interference. EDENIIOWER NEWS. Mr. Hathaway, who bought the Andrus place, has about finished moving. Mr. Hathaway is remodel ing and adding to the house and will soon have a pretty home. The new planing mill Is running at full blast, and has an abundance of work. Mr. Hurlburt, one of Edenbower's boasters, writes from his new home for some of Edenbower's strawberry plants. Rumor says that Mrs. John Bot cher Is going to the Seattle fair. Mr. DulwJnkle has about complet ed a $700 bam, with J. A. Hewitt and sons as carpenters. The ladles of tho W. C. T. U. will meet at the home of Mrs. Harry Wil liams next Friday afternoon. All In terested In temperance are cordially Invited to attend. The Ladies' New Idea Club met at the home of Mrs. Splker last Thurs day. There was a large turnout and they were royally entertained, Mrs. Splker being assisted by her daugh ter, Mrs. Lillian Fenn. Mr. F. A. McCall, the new fruit In spector, Is looking over the fruit or chards here which Is resulting In some heavy pruning for pear blight.
