No man could have struggled more valiantly for real rtviilon than has President Taft. And no man could have met with more signal defeat. There have been some "concessions to he views of the president, but tbey have been chiefly of an Incon sequential character and In sched ules where they will afford the con Humer little or no relief. It Is ex treniely doubtful if a single cornraod- Ity will be a penny cheaper to th consumer because of the Republican revision. The farce of this revision is well Illustrated by the exposure, by a Republican member of the House, of the methods adopted by Speaker Cannon and his allied to deceive th people into the belief that they were to enjoy actual revision downward 'Representative Edwards, a Republl can from Kentucky, in a moment of anger, betrayed this one secret of th Republican method of procedure. Seys Mr. Edwards: "Those of us who voted for the House bill with Its free bides. $1 lumber, reduced duty on coal, reductions In the cotton schedule, etc., did so with the dis tinct understanding that the rates were to be Increased in the Senate to a point which would be satisfact ory to our constituents. Speaker Cannon himself assured us that we need have no fear about voting for the bill for the Senate would In crease all the rates the House had reduced- Now if Mr. Cannon accept. a bill which contains any of these re ductions It will be distinctly an in Unnce of bad faith ,on hla part." The Payne bill was received by a gullible public as an evidence of sincerity on the part of the Retiubll cans, but how Insincere It was In learly detn' nstrnted by Ropresenta live Edward's expose.
