day celebration held here Saturday,
and the most succesaful event of Its
kind ever "pulled off" In this city.
Not an accident of any kind happen
ed to mar the Joyousuess of the ocea
Ion and all went home well satisfied
with the pleasures of the day. The
weathor was Ideal and from the very
broak of day people began to roll In
to town from all directions, and It
soon became difficult to elbow one's
way along the sidewalks, '
At ten o'clock the procesBlon form
ed at the Odd Fellows' Hall for the
parade. A considerable number or
floats appeared and, taken altogether,
It created not a little surprise to
even those taking part In Us makeup.
The procession was headed by the
Elkton Hand, of 12 pieces, and fol
lowed by a buggy conveying Hon. C.
L, Parker, our local newspaper man,
as president of the day, and Hov. A.
Y. Lacy, of Lebanon, orator of the
day. Then followed, each In a Bopar
ate vehicle, characters representing
"Uncle Sam," "Ooorgo and Martha
Washington," "Goddess of Liberty,"
"Queen of Electricity," the "Ke
bekahs," "Justice" and ' "Oregon,"
and "Drain, the Gateway to the
Coast," the latter gotten up by thu
local Oregon Westorn Railway boys.
Hesldos the three wagons necessary
to carry the 48 little girls represent
ing the state, the float "Everybody
Works Out Father" and several plug
ugly characters were In evidence. The
parade disbanded at the livery stable
corner and everybody moved to tlm
beautifully decorated grove, near the
Methodist Church, to witness the
program. Just here wo wish to sny
that much credit Is due Mrs. 10. U.
Applegato, who was chairman nf the
decorating committee, for the splen
did appearance of things around the
grounds.
Mr. Parker presided In an able
manner, Introducing each number
with some pleaBlng remarks. Rev.
Roy L. Dunn pronounced the Invoea
Hon. Miss Edna Patchen read the
Declaration of Independence, the
MlsaeB Junla Klrkland and Dolly
Collwell each gave rocltntlonB, and
the oration, pronounced by many to
be the best they had ever heard on s
similar occasion, by Rev. Lacy. Those
were Interspersed with the national
airs by a chorus choir and several
pieces by the band. John Wagonor
was marshal of the day.
In the afternoon the Lorane and
Drain baseball teams crossed bats lu
tho South Drain flold, the former
winning tho gnmo and the prize.
Harry Moon won the 100 yard
foot race and Fred Miller tho bicycle
race. The lunch and refreshment
stands and the merry-go-round on the
grounds did a thriving business and a
grand ball In the ovenlng at tho opera
house for those who desired to "trip
the light fantastic," completed the
day of pleasure.
Accident Near Yemeni 1a.
An accident, the results of which
might has bepri much more Berlmta,
happened Monday inorn-lUK about nine
o'clock, as Mrs. C. 1). Drain and Mm.
N. D. Cool, of this city, were on Iholr
way to a celebration at Seotts Valley:

and frightened their horse. He dash

front wheels of the vehicle loom
with which he raced wildly down the
road. A Yoncalla livery team hap
pened along Just at tho time and con
veyed -the unfortunate ladles to Yon
calla, where Dr. Mortensen attended
them. Mrs. Drain was considerably
bruised and scratched about thu face
and head and badly shaken up, and
Mra. Cool sustained a cut on the
forehead that required five stitches,
and olhor severe bruises. Their hus
bands, on hearing the news, drove to
Yoncalla and brought them home, ar
riving about one o'clock. The buggy
was badly wrecked.

home last week for a couple months'
vacation, from Del Norte county. Cali
fornia, where she has been teaching
for the past two years. She will re
turn In the fall to resume her school

The school board have employed
the following teachers to handle the
Myrtle Creek schools during the com
ing school year. E. L. Keezel, prin
cipal, and Misses Peters, Bond and
Glass as assistants.

H. J. Gross, of Shedds, Oregon,
paid his father, J. M. Gross, a visit
Saturday, returning Sunday. He has
purchased from H. J. Wilson the 40
acres upon which is located the house
known as the Wallenberg property,
and will set out an orchard.

cated in Portland report consider
able activity in the vicinity of Crater
Lake and Klamath Falls among pri
vate interests In the purchase of Um
ber from the government on a stump
age basis. Under the direction of
the forest service such timber Is dis
posed of to private parties for from
$1.50 to $3.00 a 1000 feet stump
age. With the exception of tho lo
cality referred to very little of the
government holdings In this state lt
being disposed of.
This is due to two reasons. In
the first place private Interests very
generally retain extensive holdings
which will last them for years. Sec
oiidly, the reserves as, a rule are no,
very accessible in this Btate owinit
to lack of transportation facilities.
In succeeding years, the govern
ment, through Its established system
atic method for managing Its forests,
expects to do an extensive busing

are depleted, the demand for the re
serve forest lands will Increase and

asked by the government will advance

bill by a vote or 38 to 18. The meas
ure Is to go Into effect March 11.

stricken out by the committee. The
senate also agreed to vote on the

ment to the constitution to the sev
eral states. A vote will be taken

from severnl days' examination of
the Vulcan copper mine, near Coram,
In Shasta county, California. They
state tire mine Is being systematically
developed; a large tonnage of copper
gold ore Is being opened up, and the
mine being put In shape for the min
ing and handling of large quantities
of ore dally. The ore is the same
as that aB in the Ualaklala and Trin
ity mines adjoining. The Trinity is
develoed by six miles of tunnels and
thousands of feet of diamond-drill
holes, all of which expose millions of
dollars' worth of ore.
The Vulcan mine Is severnl times
larger than the Trinity mine and
when the ore bodies are blocked out
more fully will show a like greater
amount of ore In sight. Mr. Smith
has some of the Vulcan ore sample?
at his stables.
NOTE: The Vulcan mine num
bers Its hundreds of syndicate share
holders in Northern California and In
Oregon, and more holders In Oregon
thnn In any other state.
More than one-half of the capital
stock Is In the mines trensury, nnd
upon completion of the development
work of 500,000 tons of the main ore
I body, the entire remaining allot
ment will be distributed pro rata
among the syndicate share-holders,

The estimated distribution will
probably be thirty per cent or better.

suddenly exploded at a local recrea
tion park Saturday, fatally Injuring
Captain .lam en Mooru, the aeronaut,
and Milum MyKatt, a by-stander. '
Several spectators were knockei '
down and seriously hurt, as the im
mense crowd made a rush to get
away from the scene of the accident.
Moore has a broken pelvis, a frac
tured right hip and riht arm, and
two-thirds of the surface of his body
Is frightfully burned.
Mygatt, who la 80 yeara of age,
was thrown to the ground with such
force by the explosion that he sustain
ed a fractured hip. Neither man Is
expected to live.
