Not an accident of any kind happen
ed to mar the joyouatietia of the occa
lon and all wont home well natlafled
with the pleasures of the day. The
weather was Ideal and from the very
break of day people began to roll In
to town from all directions, and It
floon became difficult to elbow one's
way along the aldewalka, '
At ten o'clock the procetmlon form
ed at the Odd Kellows' Hull for the
parade. A considerable number of
(loan appeared and, taken .altoKether,
it created not a little surprise to
even those taking part in Its makeup.
The procession was headed by tho
Elkton Hand, of 12 pieces, and fol
lowed by a buggy convoying Hon, C.
L. Parker, our local newspaper man,
as president of the day, and Itev, A.
K. Lacy, of Iebanon. orator of the
day. Then followed, each In a separ
ate vehicle, characters representing
"Uncle 8am," "Uoorgo and Murthu
Washington," "(Joddosa of Liberty,"
"Queen of Electricity," tho "Ho
bekahtt," "Justice" and "Oregon,"
and "Drain, the Gateway to the
Coast," the latter gotten up by the
local Oregon Western Hallway boys.

corner and everybody moved to the

Mr. Parker presided In an able,'
manner, Introducing each number '
with some pleasing remarks. Itev.
Roy L. Dunn pronounced the Invoca
tion, Miss Edna Patchen road the
Declaration of Indopendenco, the
MIsseB Junla Klrkland and Dolly
Collwoll each gave recital Ions, and
the oration, pronounced by many to
be tho boat they had ever heard on a
similar occasion, by Itev, Lacy. These
were Intcrsperaed with tho national
airs by a chorus choir and several
pieces by the band. John Wagonor
was marshal of the day. -
In 4he afternoon the Lornne and
Drain baseball teams crossed huts In
the South Drain field, the former
winning tho game and the prlte.
Harry Moon won the 100 yards
foot race and Fred Miller tho bicycle
race. The lunch and refreshment
stand's and the merry-go-round on the
grounds did a thriving business and a
grand ball In the everting at the opera
house for thoso who desired to "trip
the light fantastic," completed the
day of pleasure.
Accident New YoncalM.
An accident, the results of which
tnlr.ht has been much morp serious,
happened Monday morning about nine
o'clock, as Mrs. C. 1), Drain and Mrs.
N. I. Cool, of this city, wore on tholr
way o a celebration at ScoKb Valley:
When within about a half mile of the
celebration grounds In tholr single
buggy, a wagou containing an organ
with a white covering, came suddenly
Into the highway, from a side mad.
and frightened their horse. He dash
ed out of the road onto a hillside,
where tho buggy upset, throwing -the
occupants to the ground and dragged
them several feet, finally tearing the
front wheels of the vehicle loose
with which he raced wildly down the
road. A Yoncalla livery team hap
pened along Just at the time and con
veyed -the uufortunate ladies to Yon
calla, where Dr. Mortensen attended
them. Mrs. Drain wan considerably
bru-lsed and scratched about the face
and head and badly vhnken up. and
Mm. Cool sustained a cut on the
forehead that required five stitches,
and other aevero bruised. Their hus
bands, on hearing the news, drove to
Yoncalla and brought them home, ar
riving abotU one o'clock. The buggy
was badly wrecked.

cated in Portland report consider
able activity In the vicinity of Crater
Lake and Klamath Falls among pri
vate Interests In the purchase of thn
bor from the government on a stump
ago bnsls. Under the direction of
the forest service such timber Is dis
posed of to private parties for from
$1.50 to $3.00 a 1000 feet stump
age. With the exception of the lo
cality referred to very little of the
government holdings In this state Is
being disposed of.
ThiB Is due to two reasons. In
the first place private interests very
generally retain extensive holdings
which will laat thein for years. Sec
oudly, the reserves as, a rule are no
very accessible in this state owiim
to lack of transportation facilities.
In succeeding years, the govern
ment, through Its established system
atic method for managing its forests,
expects -to do an extensive business
in this direction. As private holdingj
are depleted, the demand for the re
servo forest lands will increase and
the stum page charge thnt will be
asked by the government will advance
accordingly.

The Senate today adopU'd maximum
and minimum provisions of the tariff
bill by a vote ol 38 to 18. The meas
ure is to go Into effect March 11.
1910, and ninety days must elapse
before the president's proclamation
applying the maximum duty of 25
per cent ad valorem In addition to
regular tariff duties will be operative.
Duty on lea and coffee provided
for In the amendment originally re
ported by the finance committee was
stricken out by tho committee. The
senate also agreed to vote on the
submission of the income tax amend
ment to the constitution to the sev
eral states. A vote will be taken
Monday afternoon.

Examine a Topper Mine.
E. K. Smith, of the Ashland Livery
stables, and J. S. Sllsby, of the Ash
land Truck Co., returned yesterduy
from several days' examination of
the Vulcan copper mine, near Curam.
in Shasta county, California. They
state tire mine is being systematically
developed; a large tonnage of copper
gold ore is being opened up, and the
mine being put In shape for the min
ing and handling of large quantities
of ore dally. The ore Is the same
as that as in the Balaklala and Trin
ity mines adjoining. The Trinity Is
developed by six miles of tunnclB and
thousands of feet of diamond-drill
holes, all of which expose millions of
dollars' worth, of ore.
The Vulcan mine is several times
larger than the Trinity mine and
when the ore bodies are blocked out
more fully will show a like greater
amount of ore in sight. Mr. Smith
has some of the Vulcan ore samples
at his stables.
NOTK: The Vulcan mine num
bers its hundreds of syndicate share
holders In Northern California and In
Oregon, and more holders in Oregon
than in any other state.
More than one-half of the capital
stock is in tho mines treasury, and
upon completion of the development
work of 500.000 tons of the main ore
, body, the entire remaining allot
ment will be distributed pro rain
among the syndicate share-holders,
as a stock dividend.
The estimated distribution will
probably be thirty per cent or better.

suddenly exploded at a local recrea
tlon park Saturday, fatally Injuring
Captain .lames Mooru, the aeronaut,
and Milton Mysatt, a by-stander. -Several
Hpectators were knocke.1 '
down and seriously hurt as the im
mouse crowd made a rush to get
away from the scene of the accident.
Moore has a broken pelvis, a frac
tured right hip and riht arm, and
two-thirds of the surface of his body
Is frightfully burned.
MygaU, who is 80 years of age,
was thrown to the ground with such
force by the explosion that he sustain
ed a fractured hip. Neither man la
expected to live.
