life, here In Oregon. Of course no
true Orcgniilan will, admit that It

any other part of the West. In many
particulars we are really getting off
easier than In other sections, for that
portion of our domain that Ib proper
ly trained is capable of crops that
cause the producer thereof to gain
the reputation of a liar when he telle
of them, lint the fact that It re
quires high finance to live in Oregon

bo covered up, and there are aeveral

with regard to it every time a bill

One of the Portland papers has
been publishing a series of communi
cations on the subject of various citi
zens, and the expressions of opinions
are interesting If not conclusive. The
claim ,1s made by one that by "brasB
ba-nd" methods of advertising, Port
land and all Western Oregon has
been over-populated with the class of
people who, while they must eat three
meals a day with more or less regu
larity, are producing very little and
adding little to the aggregate wealth
of the Htato. The" state has a chronic
shortage of butter, eggs, meats, po
tatoes, grain and other commodities
and of necessity they must command
higher prices than they should. Then
as a matter of course, the laborer
must charge more for his work or
he cannot subsist upon the high
priced food; and the fact that the la
borer demands a high price for his
service compels the contractor, the
manufacturer, the lumberman, the
fruitgrower and other producers to
charge a higher price for their out
put, and so the thing works around
again upon the poor consumer.
Not only does the price of labor
and the scarcity of produce compel
the farmer to charge a high price
for his grain and vegetables but the
over-valuation of farm lands makes it
necessary In order to get a fair re
turn upon his Investment; for there
is no denying that in some sections
the price of land has been boosted
beyond warrant. In some of our
cities notably Portland the value
of city property has been boomed be
yond all reason, and this coupled
with the high taxes, compels the mer
chant to exact a large profit in order
to cover the expense of doing busi
ness. The great need In Oregon, then, is
to keep the boom propensity within
legi ti mate bou nds, to increase ou r
productive area, and to quadruple
our producing population. This brings
us bark to our oft-repeated counsel
to new-comers and natives alike. (jet

fever the craze to make money out
of some other fellow's gullibility in
the matter of land buying the soon
er will the state get down to a sub
stantial basis of wealth producing
and of stable values.

WEDS MAX YOUNGER
THAN HER CHILDREN.
GARFIELD, Wash., June 14. On
Tuesday. June 1, Mrs. Charlotte Har
land, aged 68 years, and a pioneer of
the Paiouse country, was married to
Gus Laxso, of Rock Lake. Mr. Laxso
is 38 years of age, several years
younger than any of Mrs. Harland's
children by her first husband.
Mrs. Harland was worth, in lands
at Garfield, $25,000, and $10,000 In
cash. The happy couple is living on
the farm near town.
