Biz month' time is allowed by this act for making the necessary changes. Game Code Corrected. Other enactments were corrections of the game code relating to elks, deer, ducks and hunting and Ashing by night. Today all provisions of the new game code will be In full force and its effect on Oregon'&ame, It Is believed, will be to more fully protect It than has ever been re quired. The big appropriation for the asy lum, for which the session was called, was passed; an appropriation of $15,000 for the maintenance of the eastern Oregon Agricultural Ex perimental station and an appropria tion of (70,000 for salarie and con tingent expenses of the supreme court, which was bungled by the regular session, were made. An act to codify the laws and tat utes of Oregon was enacted by th( apeclal session. This was an act to amend an act of the regular session which had omitted several essential) such as a provision for a coyprlght. It la expected that the supreme court will today appoint a code commis sioner or possibly two, as the law provldos, who will have suitervlslon of this work. Hoard of lliujhcr Education The act creating a board of hlghei curricula for the purpose of deter mining what coursos shall ho dupli cated in tbe University of Oregon and the Oregon Agricultural College, was also passed by the special ses sion, but that act carried an emer gency clause and went Into effect Im mediately. The board has been ap pointed and has begun lie delibera tions. Game law ChunircN. One chapter of the new gnino lav. prohibits the killing of elk until August 1, 1919; after that date mak ing It unlawful to kill same between September 1 and August 1 of each year, and limiting the number to br killed during tbo open Boason to one elk in any one year. Another chapter prohibits the use of any gun, Are, Aashllght. or other Inflammable substance, upon the mar gin, In the vicinity of, or upon any lake, pond or slough or other feeding grounds frequented by ducks, geesa swan or other water fowl with In tont to shoot, kill or disturb any such water fowl, at any time between one hour after sunset and one-hall hour before sunrise. Rob erts, tbe convict who escaped from the Oregon penitentiary this morn ing about 6:30, was still at large at a late hour tonight. Roberts was employed on the spur track being built between the peni tentiary and the asylum, and when a good opportunity presented Itself he made a dash for a nearby wheat field, through which he crawled for a con siderable distance, Anally making his escape. The convict was Bent up from Multnomah county for three years for larceny. TAKT'8 UTTERANCE ILL OMEN FOR NICKELL, WASHINGTON. June 14 Senators Bourne and Chamberlain have Inter viewed Attorney General WU-ker-shatn concerning the petition for the pardon of Charles Nlckell, the Jack sonville (Or.) newspaiwr editor, who was convicted of land frauds and who was recently denied a writ of cer tiorari by the Supreme Court. Peti tion numerously signed have been forwarded. Though the senators and others will exert Influence to Induce the president to grant a pardon, an ut terance of Taft when Meldrum's ap plication came upwould seem to in dicate that It Is not likely Nlckell' pardon will be granted. The presl- lent said as to Meldrum: .no gov ernment official convicted of acts it official criminality should be pardoned." As Nlckoll was a United Stoles Commissioner It Is therefore prob able he will have to serve his sentence. DIED.
