Senator Gore, the blind statesman
from Oklahoma, Is taking an active
part in the discussion on the pend
ing tariff bill. Despite his affliction
he Is following the debate closely
and frequently interjects short
speeches that not only demonstrate
his information upon tho subject un
der consideration, but which are us
ually tinged with a homely humor
and a directness of expression which
help to enliven the prosaic details
of tho discussion.
When in action, no spectator in
the gallery, unacquainted with the
fact, would suspect him of blindness.
He has a trick of holding in his haudB
a piece of paper nnd of occasionally
turning towards it as though consult
ing notes, which would make the un
initiated imagine that he was read
lug from it. He Is an earnest and
energetic speaker, with a resonant
voice which can be heard in all parts
of the Senate chamber, and a deliv
ery emphasized by wild shakings of
the head which seriousiy musses up
his hair.
He has another trick. Always when
speaking he has a large book on the
desk In front of him. Upon this he
places one hand while with the other
he gesticulates. He alternates these
hands frequently but always when
one hand leaves the book the other
Beeks It. In this way he retains his
sense of position, or geography, and
knows just where is his glass of wa
ter or bundle of papers as well as
though he had sight.
Senator tlore Is a constant source
of wonder and admiration to his col
leagues. Not all of them, by any
menus, on either side of the chamber,
agree with his radical views on some
questions, but republicans as well as
democrats are constantly belns
amazed by the display of his remark
able powers of memorization. He
reft of the sense of sight he has de
veloped his picnirry to tin extraor
dinary degree. Sometimes he will
quote section;; of the p.ndiug bill. At
others, after listening to a long and
technical explanation of some sub

during the course of the speech, quote
it accurately mid proceed to criticise
it.

the Summer Session which begins on
June 28th, naming six weeks, and
closing August rth. Announcement
has just been made by Dr. II. D. Shel
don, dean of tho session, that he has
secured the services of Prof. Samuel
B. Seward, Jr., of Stanford Univer
sity, in English Literature and Rhe
toric to take the place of Prof. Howe,
who is unable to teach on account of
illness. Prof. Seward has had much
experience ns a teacher in summer
schools. The courses that we will of
fer will be in direct preparation for
the August state examinations.
