That clerKyuien and laymen should not use tobacco; that It is not contrary to their church for Presbyterian Judges to grant saloon licenses, and that a committee of ministers and laymen shall inquire Into methods to be inn sued In seminaries in teaching "mod ern theology," were the principal matters approved by the general as sembly of the Presbyterian church to day. The clause regarding tobacco came In the consideration of the report of the temperance committee. The re port commended President Taft, Em peror William and President Eliot, of Harvard university, for being teeto talers, and urged the ministers of the church to petition congress to stop Interstate shipments of liquor, to dis continue the Issuance of Internal rev enue receipts in prohibition territory and to prohibit the use of the mails for the distribution ot liquor aavcr Using or liquor. The report commended one fra tcrnal order "heretofore noted for lis convivial membership, for Its action in discontinuing the sale or drinking of liquor about tho lodge premises. Newspapers which curry liquor ad vertlsliig fell under the ban of the assembly, It being recommended that such papers be not patronized. "Social drinking" also received a set-back, when It was urged that the women's societies of the church make war on this evil and make It their business to fight the use of liquor In women's clubs mid the home. The matter of "modern theology and courses of study to meet with I modern conditions" came up in the I report of the committee on theologi cal seminaries. In us recommendiv tion the committee said that, while there was a demand for advanced teaching, It was their belief that the doctrines of the Presbyterian church were sufficient to meet modern condi tions.
