man exploration party. Besides a
crew of a dozen men. the Arntlc car
ried a score of foremen and mechan
ics and all the materialK necessary
for equipping the gas plant and sup
ply post to be established on the
bleak and barren coast of Spitsber
gen. It is said that the Chicago news
paper which financed Mr. Wellman's
earlier pole-dashing expeditions,
which expedited only In the news
papers, has tired of the game and the
coming dash will be under Mr. Well
man's individual direction. The sin
ews of flight have been supplied by
Americans who believe that the pro
ject is feasible and are backing the
former Journalist with all the neces
sary money. Mr. Wellman will
spend some thne in Norway before
sailing for the rendezvous.
The balloon will start from Danes
Island, Spitsbergen, in August, it
weather conditions are favorable. The
airship will be the "America," which
had a trial in a voyage of about 20
miles nt Spitsbergen a year ago last
Sc-ptem ber.
