At a meet ing of the Board of Regents of Nor mal Schools, In the office of the gov ernor today, It wan decided that if formal application shall be made, which la expected, the normal school buildings at Ashland, Weston, Mon mouth will be leaned this year for summer normal school purposes. It was further decided that the board should have nothing to do with the conduct or management of the schools other than as a lessor, and that no contributions or donations will be rocelved by the board. The schools will closo In June with about S6G00 In unpaid claims contracted nrlor to the act of the legislature cutting oft state support, and these unpaid bills will not be paid unless they shall be paid by private persons under the laws of the state, any teacher, In writing for a state certl flcate, la given a credit of 30 months' teaching experience for a normal school diploma, and the question will be up to the State Hoard or Educa tion as to whether the private nor mals which Ashland, Wceton and Monmoutn propose to conuuci proper ly come under the head of chartered educational Institutions. The Bengstacken building, a two story frame structure on Hroadway near C, Btreet, waB burned, and foi a time tbe Garfield Hotel, on Front street, and a whole block on C street. ' known as the Donaldson property were threatened. It looked Impossible for a time tr save the whole row of buildings, and a doien of the business houses moved out all their goods and fixtures. A grand Jury failed to Indict him on a murder charge, but to guard against future Indictments Prosecut or Roy Insisted that ho go through the formality of a trial. On learning that his sister would be required to tell the tale of the attack to the court, tho brother pleaded guilty of manslaughter and Insisted upon an Immediate sentence He was given five years In tho state prison by the Judge, who announced that he would be the first to sign a petition for his Immediate pardon. James Lulrd, a pioneer resident of Brewster Valley and a veteruu stage contractor of the HoHeburg-Coos lluy road, kuowu to almost everyone liv ing on that line, died at the home of his sou, Joseph Laird, in Myrtle Point, Coos county, .last Saturday, May 8, lDO'J, Ho was 77 years of age. rJince tne beginning or iuhi winter, Mr. Laird hud suffered from a complication of Ills attending oiu age, but notwithstanding this heavy handicap his dally activities did not cease until a week before his death, when a sudden change for tho worse occurred. The funeral was held at Dora, near Myriro Point, on Sunday. Mr. Laird's surviving four sons were at his bedside when he passed away. These, besides Joseph Laird, are James D., Waller and llnley Laird, all of Sltkum. Mr. Lnlrd also leavos threo daughters, Mrs. Eunice McDanlel, of Sacramento, Calif.; Mrs. Emma Anderson, of Klamath county, Or., and Mrs. Emma Hetty, of Fair view, Coos county. His mother is still living at the age of nearly 100 years, at Crescent City, Calif., with his sister. He also leavea a sister In Josephine county, Oregon, and one brother, Walter Laird, of Parkers burg, Coos county. A native of lowa, Mr. Laird emi grated to California when a youna man and remained In that statu until about 30 years ago, when ho moved to tills state, locating In lirewster Valley at a place lie named Bltkum. About the same time the road be tween Itoseburg and Myrtle Point was- opened and Mr. Laird took up the occupation of Binge operator nnd mall contractor on that lino. In this he was engaged continuously until fow years ago, when he chuuged his occupation to that of a teamster and rancher. Mr. Laird waB well known In Roseburg and visited this city fre quently after retiring from tho stnge business. Of Into years ho had de voted a great share of his time to ward the betterment of tho Coos Hay road, and it was through his personal agitation and efforts that the Coob county commissioners appro priated large sums of monoy for the Improvement of that highwny. As a re sult of the municipal primaries Sat urday afternoon, former United Stales Senator Joseph Simon, republi can, and former Circuit Judge a. it. Munley, democratic candidate, will face each other In the June election for mayoralty honors. Senator Simon was selected by his party to head the ticket by a two-to- one majority over A. u. itushiignt. Chas. E. McDonnell, a well known Spanish-American war veteran, ran third in tho race, and Senator A. A. Bailey fourth. Munley's victory was by a narrow margin over Mayor Har ry Lane.
