Not In recent years baa there been so BcrloUB an outbreuk of the dreaded foot and mouth disease as that which has lately broken out In New York and Pennsylvania nnd has nioro re cently Hindu Its uppenranco In Michi gan, a fact that would point to the likelihood of its spread to other west ern stales. The three states mention ed have been placed under strict quar antlue, and everything possible Is be ing douo by tbo federal and respec tive state veterlnnry authorities to keep tbo plague in check. While the actual mortality from the disease in this country has been quite low, ow ing to the rigid quarantine regula tions which havo been enforced, it has nevertheless caused great losses to dairy aud live stock Interests In various stntcs. The malady Is espe cially Infections, attacking neatly all species of domestic mid wild animals and even human beings, being con tracted by them through handling tho affected jauluiuls and by chlldron through drinking quantities of tho uu boiled milk. In both animals and hu man beings tho symptoms of the dis ease are Blmllar. There ure fever nnd difficulty In swallowlug, followed by the appearance of blisters lu the mouth. In tho case of cattle thero is a feverish, painful and swollen con dition of the feet, followed lu from twenty-four to forty-eight hours by the appearance of numerous vesicles or water blisters, varying In size from a pen to n hnselmit, on tho feet and In tho inouth. The Internal organs may be attacked before there- Is any npponranco of the dlsense external!- In mild cases rocovory usually tnltes place In from ten to twenty days, while In the more sovero It tuny re quire from throo months to a year. Tho mortality from the dlscnso Is not great, running from 1 to 3 pel" cent lu mild nnd as high as 6 per cent in severe outbreaks. 8ILAOE A8 A RATION FOR 8HEEP. We nro In receipt of a query from a reader of these notes owning a stock farm lu Kniigamon county. III., asking fur some data relative to the feeding or fattening of sheep partly or largely on ensilage. Not having had expert-cii-o nlung tills lino, the writer refer red tho question to the animal hus bandry department of the Iowa State college nt Ames nnd received a reply from the nsslstnnt In the department. E. T. Bobbins, containing a suminnry uf tho station's sheep feeding experi ments, lie says that very little has been done along the lino of feeding sllago to sheep 111 this or uny other country. Experiments In sheep feed ing enrrtod on by the Iowa station, the results of which nro as yet unpub lished, show that a larger gain results when tho sllago Is fed than with dry feed alone nnd that tho gain Is cheap er when the silage Is fed In comtilnn tlou. It has been found Hint sjieep will eat but limited quantities of slliige, from one to three pounds per day. anil that they will ent as much hay when provided a ration of It as they will when fd hay alone. Tho same grain ration should be glTcn tho sheep having a sllnge ration us when they nre getting dry feed. At the station corn Is fed alone If clover or alfalfa Is the roughage, while If prnlrlo liny or a mixed liny containing n Inrgo per rent of timothy Is fed cottonseed mcnl or ollinenl In fed with the corn at the ratio of one pnrt to three of corn to supply the nerdid protein, In which iKifh wild and timothy hay are Inrs lacking. Should any render of these notes have hnd more extensive expe rience than that given nbove In the mntter of feeding sllnge to sheep we would be plcnscd to give the results of their experience. THE BOY PAID. Not long slure. lu the course nf u converrintlon with a warm hearted sensible mother, reference was made to her sixteen-year-old son, who stood n bend taller than herself nnd In whom iic clearly evinced a Justifiable prld She replied by saying thnt some folks raised the question whether boys nnd girls paid, hut thnt In her own enno she found the boy hnd paid well from the stnrt nnd nns giving a good return every day on the Investment mndu In Llni. While we hnd no way of know Inu except from superflclnl observe Mot., It Is more thnn likely thnt boy paid becnuso n thoughtful, sympathetic mother felt a kindly ana companion able Interest In li I in. making hlin feel thnt lie amounted to something and wns really worth while. It is fair to aFsntne. too. that a fnther who feels real Interest in the alms and ambl tlons of his tmy and who Is one of his best friends has had a good deal to do In mnklm him a paying proposition in the test meaning of the term.
