Grant, was admit ted to probate In the county court this morning, and Fred Grant, son of the deceased, and solo heir, was ap pointed administrator. The property of the estate Is valued at $2483. Grant died at the Soldiers' Home in Roseburg, March 2. Attorney Chas. J. Senatorial elections by the legis lature In Oregon had given rise to all sorts of scandals growing cut of the use of money, the promise of politi cal patronage and other corrupting instrumentalities resulting in legis lative holdups, in defeating meritor ious laws, and in enacting vicious ones, and eo general was the senti ment amongst the people thnt an end must be put to this nefarious condi tion, that most all the candidates for the legislature felt it necessary to subscribo to Statement No. 1, binding themselves to vote for the people's choice for senator in order to insure their own elections. Promises of place, and other influ ences were brought to bear on mem bers who were pledged, to induce them to violate the solemn pledges made by them to their constituents before election, but to the everlast ing credit of the citizenship of the state, be it said that not one could be found base enough to betray his trust. It was the expiring effort and gony of the old machine methods ivhlch for so long a timo held sway in ne of the fairest commonwealths of the nation. There may be some defects In the Oregon constitutional amendment with respect to the Initiative nnd ref erendum. A few minor changes might bs made in the law governing nominations for office. Hut the prin ciple Involved in both Is right, nnd so far as Oregon 1s concerned, it has come to stay, and the man who un dertakes to defeat it takes his politi cal life In his own hands and can safely count on his complete destruc tion. It Is urged by the opponents of the Oregon plan and It may he admitted that In the enactment of laws, the people may sometimes make mis takes. To this it may bo answered that legislative bodies have done, and will continue to do, the same thing. But there is 'this difference between mnny at least of the mistakes of the two concurrent legislative bodies of the commonwealth: The mistakes of the people are errors of judgment and not of heart, while the errors of many of the legislative bodies of many of the states of the Union are corrupt mistakes made w.Ith knowl edge and because interested individ uals have induced them to do so through the use of money and such other instrumentalities as nro ordin arily used to debase, debauch and corrupt the lawmaking power. It has been charged that where the people are vested with legislative power, the result will be a code of conflicting and radical enactments. Such has not been the case in Ore gon. Last night's meeting of the trustees of the Roseburg Commercial Club was devoted largely to the consider ation of rouilno business, auditing bills, etc. The president of the Ladles' Aux iliary aunouueed through the presi dent of the club, receipt ot a com munication from the management ot the Portland Rose Show, saying that Ralph Hoyt, president of that affair, will be in Roseburg on Saturday evening of this week in the Interest of Douglas county's participation in that event. After discussion It was decided to coll a special Joint meet ing of the Commercial Club and Ladles' Auxiliary for Saturday even ing to meet with Mr. Hoyt and adopt some plan for advertising Douglas county at the big Portland carnival. Every member of both clubs is re quested to bo present. Last year, through the efforts of tho Indies. Roseburg secured a good lot of adver tising at the Portland Rose Show at a very nominal expense and some means will probably be devised to repeat that success this year. The Seattle exposition may also bo In cluded In tills year's plans. The soliciting committee for this year's advertising fund will meet to night to begin active work. The last year's fund Ib now exhausted and tho new booklets and other matter must be paid .for. C. B.
