Muntell, Native of This County, Walter at Local Restaurant For a Month Past. John A. Mantell, a deserter from the United States army, was arrested by Marshal Norman and Sheriff Fen ton Wednesday evening at Bert Ad erton's restaurant, near the depot, where Mantell has been employed aa a waiter for a month past. Mantell strenuously denies that he is the man wanted, but he Is positively identified by four distinct scars and a dagger tatoo mark on I1I3 body and an army shirt found In his room. Sheriff Fen ton will leavo Saturday with Man tell for the V. 8. army barracks at Vancouver, Wa?h., and receive the i $50 reward offered for the deserter's! arrest The circular sent out by the army officers says that Mantell, an Infau-. try private, deserted the Vancouver ! post last October. His ago Is given , as 22 years. The circular further . Bays that Mantell Is a native of Doug- ius vuiiuiy, ua'fiuu, wuicu pruuuuiy accounts for his location In RoBe burg after his flight. Nothing can be learned of Manteli's family con nection. Night Officer Huffman says he has seen Mantell making "short change" at the cash register in Adderton's restaurant. On this account, Mantell Ib suspected by the officers of being the person who last Tuesday night robbed A. T. Thompson's confection ery and tobacco store, the rear of which place adjoins the rear of -the restaurant. None of the goods stolen, however, 'have been found either on Mantell'a person or In his room. Thompson Store Robbery Tho robbery at Thompson's store netted the thieves $6 in monoy and goods to the valuo of $20, as near as Mr. Thompson can estimate. En-1 trance was effect by prying off the ; lock of a rear door with the layer of a wagon spring. With this instru ment the cash drawer containing the money was forced open. -Then the thief or thieves proceeded to make a big clean-up among articles of stock, taking not less than $10 worth of candles and gum and fully an equal amount of cigars, tobacco, cigarettes and cigarette papers. That no lunch goods were touched shows conclusive ly that the job was not done by "hobos." An amusing Toatnre of tho robbery bears on a nickel-ln-the-slot device which Mr. Thompson uses In -the sale of a certain kind of gum. All of the packages of gum In this device were taken,- but the thief, Instead of ex pedttin" matters by smashing the glass case, contented himself with emptying Its contents by dropping In nickel sized slugs taken from a cash register behind the counter. Mr. Thompson hss been in the hab it of leaving his vigilant fox terrier In tho store nt nights, but ou the night of the robbery the dog was at homa with its owner. Had the dog been left in tho store, tho robbery would perhaps have never occurred.
