Mrs. Casey was a native of County Longrora, Ire land, and crossed the plains to Ore gon In 1852, locating In Oregon City, where she married James Casey. Snow was falling at Seattle, Walla Walla and Spokane. At Calgary the temperature was 32 degress below zero; at Nome 6 above. Fred J. Blakeley returned this morning from a business trip to Pittsburg and other eastern cities. He says "things look good for the west." Surplus money In the financial centers is being moved this way for securities of an agricultural charac ter, and the Immigration from the east this year will be almost wholly made up of people with capital seek ing land, instead of prospective home steaders, for whom there are no longer any great opportunities. Jas. N. Randlo, of Eugene, was here Thursday and Friday, detnon- tratlng the Black Motor Vehicle (au tomobile buggy) just purchased by Dr. E. V. Hoover. This machine is equipped with wheels the same size as buggy wheels and these may have either hard rubber or steel tires, so It can be easily operated on muddy roods. This vehicle is known as a 2-horse-power runabout, designated as No. 12 In their catalogues. They range in price from $375 to $900, and are equipped with one, two or three seats, according to price and model. The machine shown here by Mr. ; Randle was given a thorough tryout In running over muddy roads, hlll-cllmbing, etc., He went over the Deer Creek hill and back and over the hills on the road leading south ward out of town, as well as the North Roseburg and Soldiers' Home hills. He had no trouble In climbing any of them. This machine seems to have solved the problem of an all- the-year-round motor vehicle where muddy roads are to be contended with.
