Review Lumbermen Protest Against Removal of Tariff FEAR CANADIAN DEALERS Hepburn Law Grilled Knox' Salary to be Lowered Railroad Case Has Critical Day Special to the Evening Review. WASHINGTON, D. C, Feb. 13. Announcement that the House com mittee on ways and means had deter mined to recommend the abolition of the tariff on all grades of lumber Is bringing to Washington lumbermen from all parts of the country to lobby Bgalnst the adoption of the report. The lumber Interests will use the ar 'gument that if congress abolishes the tariff the lumber (Industry of the country will be dealt a blow from which It will never recover. The.lob byistB are particularly anxious to have the duty on the low grades pre served, saying if this Is not done the country will be flooded with lumber from Canada. The decision of the committee Is based on the view that the lumber industry of the country Is controlled by a trust and Is therefore not en titled to further protection. Qualifying Knox. Action to remove the obstacle ti the qualification of Senator P. C. Knox as secretary of state was taken by the house committee on elec tions, which today recommended that the act increasing the salary of that office from $8000 to 12,000 per year be repealed. Hi'pliurn Law Grilled. In the house today Representative Madden, of Illinois, declared the Hepburn railroad rate law to be "makeshift legislation;" that It was "a forest of legislative exotics and a tangled wilderness of words."
