Miller received a telegram a few days since announc ing the death of their little grand daughter. Grace Evelyn, at Kennett. Calif. Llttlo Grace was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Miller, and was four years and seven months old. She died February 3, after an Illness of about two weeks of tuber culosis of the brain. This was not the first time Abra ham had taken the floor this morn Ins on the salary question. He oppos ed Increasing the salary of the judge of the eighth district, a bill presented by Hart. Abraham said that maybe the senators were under obligations to Hart, or feared him, or wanted to swap votes with him, and for these reasons he would Bupport the bill, despite the veto. Bingham chipped In by asserting that Hart was cap able of representing the constituents of his district, and that U the people did not want the salary of the Judge raised, they could act. Abraham's Ijona; WinuVilneas Causes Joke to be l'hiycd oil Him. The senate "framed up" a practical joke on Senator Abraham this even ing and worked it successfully. Sen ator Abraham speaks more frequent ly and a little longer than most of the senators think he should, hence the joke. While be was speaking on Uie bill providing for the manner of creating new counties, Senator Hart, Interrupted by remarking, "The sen ator's time Is up." Instantly 28 other senators sprang up, extending tloir arms toward Abraham and ex claiming, "He can have my time." Senator Abraham subsided, but took the joke good naturally, leer Kill Killed. Discovery by Representative Cal kins of a "joker" In substitute House bill 167, providing for precinct elec tions on the subject of whether or not beer, as distinguished from whis key and other - liquors, should be sold In those preclncta, resulted In the disastrous defeat of that bill In the house this afternoon. As originally Introduced, the bill proposed an election "for or against the bP industry." This form was objectionable to the committee on revision of laws, which returned an unfavorable report, and the bill at that time was saved from Indefinite postponement by ItB re-reference to the committee on alcoholic tramc with Instructions to report It in an amended form. The decisiveness with which this bill was put to sleep by the house to day Is believed to have sounded the death knell to all other measures at tempting amendments of the local option law at this session, so far as the House Is concerned. The senti ment in the house was such that It Is not believed the substitute beer bill could have passed ever had the "Joker" not been discovered. ItudKi l So Fur $3,70H,000. The makeup of the legislative bud got as far as it has proceeded indi cates that appropriations will reach $3, 70S, 035, including standing ap propriations. The ways and means committee of the house today introduced a general bill appropriating $1,647,080. This Is $279,610 more than the same bill two years ago. It provides for run ning expenses and salaries of state departments and Institutions. Yesterday the committee intro duced a deficiency bill for $104, 206.83, or $52,385.87 more than two years ago.
