A good Blzed audience was enter tained at the Baptist church Tuesday evening, by the DeMoss "lyric bards. A long program of musical numbers was well rendered. Being composers, as well as musicians in the ordinary sense, their work Is often more of a spontaneous nature, than truly ar tistic In rendition. Their "Sweet Ore gon" alone, has done much to make them famous, both the words and music being of their own compost- tion. Some years ago this song was sung In many of the public schools of this state, and we believe it should be regularly Included In our public school songs as it Is not only full of harmony but bubbling over with local patriotism and state pride. Mr. Geo. DeMoss, who now has charge of this company, tells ub that the name. "Lyric Bards," by which they are everywhere known, was first given them by the Roseburg Review many years ago, when this paper was un der the management of Rev. J. R. N. Bell. Their family home and head quarters are at DeMoss Springs, Crook county, Oregon, and they never fall to sing the praises ot this state wherever they go, whether In this country or in Europe. They went south from here on this trip, but will return -to the Willamette Valley from Ashland. Jacksonville (Or.) Post: Word has reached tills office that John Nor ling struck a large body of Iron ore assaying 51 per cent Iron. The strike was made about one mile west of Jacksonville. Mr. Norling sent a sam ple of ore to the assayer a few weeks ago, thinking that it was gold bear- ing rock, but It proved to be rich In Iron. With an unlimited amount of timber tributary to the strike and an excellent smelter site on the ground, this may prove to be a valu able piece of property. (Mr. Norling will be remembered In Roseburg as a director of the Roseburg band four years ago.) Company D., Oregon National Guard, of Roseburg, underwent In spection at Its armory Tuesday night by Major McLaughlin, Fourth Field Artillery, of Vancouver. At the con clusion of the inspection Major Me Laughlln announced himself as well pleased with the condition ot the guns and other accoutrements and said that the drilling was up to the high standard of those ot all the other Oregon companies, which he had Inspected. Out of Co. D's total enrollment of 61, there were present 52 guardsmen. Some of the absent ones, considered Inexcusable, will have to stand court martial. At a meeting of the board of trustees of the Roseburg Commercia Club Tuesday evening the resignation of J. D. Hendricks was the scene of unsual beauty last Tues day night on the occasion of the cele bration in honor of the 102nd anni versary of the birth of Robert E. Lee, held by the U. D. C. The rooms were beautifully decorated for the occa sion, the Confederate and Union flags having a conspicuous place among the decorations. The ladles and escorts were out in force and a most delightful evening was spent. Rev. R. L. Sprinkle made an in teresting and Instructive oration on the life and achievements of General I Robert E. Lee. He was listened to with rapt attention throughout his discourse. Miss Mary Koonce sang a patriotic song, all present joining in the chorus. Misses Bernetta Nesblt and Mary Koonce gave a duet on auto harps, which was excellent. A rare treat was tho reading from 'Uncle Remus" by Mrs. R. L. Har grove, whose Imitation of the dialect was exceedingly clever. By special request Miss Hendricks rendered two original compositions on the piano in a highly clever and pleasing manner. The affair closed with a delicious luncheon. It was a late hour when all departed for their homes, having spent a most delightful evening.
