Barker, of Medford, arrived here this morning from San Remo, Italy, where he visited with his sis ter. While abroad he bIbo visited at his old home In England. During the four months' of his ab sence he travelled 17,000 miles. San Remo is In northern Italy, on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, and abdut 200 miles from the scene of the recent earthquake, which des troyed 150,000 lives and a large number of cities and -towns. As a re sult of this disaster, Mr. Barker says that probably 600.000 Italians will emigrate to the United States this year. This Information he obtained from the steamship companies. Miss Mamie Wise visited Cottage Grove friends Tuesday. Mr. Post and Arthur Johnson, of Wallowa, Or., who are enroute to Mexico in view of locating, spent Sunday in Yoncalla, tho guests of friends. Mr. Claud Wise will leave Satur day for Cottage Grove, where he will enter tho High school at that place. Success to you, Claud. Mrs. Alma Harness, of Roseburg. visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jus. Ambrose, of this place, recently. Her many friends here are glad to havr her with them. Mrs. E. Peterson, of North Rend, a clerk of the legislature, was the guest of friends here last week. Galen Devore, many years a resi dent of Yoncalla, but now of Cen tralta, Wash., was on Thursday even ing s train enroute to Oakland to visit his brother, Clay, and sister, Mrs. Emily Sawyer. The general health at Yoncalla Is excellent and has been so all winter. A few elderly people are ailing, among them being our townsman, G. A. Burt, known by his host of friends as "Pappy" Burt, who at pres ent is suffering of asthma. Mr. McKinney, who last spring married Miss Bird Turptn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Turpin, of Scotts Valley, became ill while trav ellng with his wife in the east and died in Kansas a few weeks ago. Mrs. McKinney Is well and favorably known here and will soon return. The basket ball teams have theii suits finished, and are doing some scientific practicing at the Opera House. A few black eyes and sev eral scratched noses don't matter when weighed in the balance with so much fun. Mrs. Henry Burt recently visited her brother. John Goodell, and fam ily at Salem. Mr. Goodell hus filled a government, position in Alaska for several years, but owing to the ill health of his eldest son he returned to Salem and opened a law ofllce. Mrs. Harry Stearns visited home folks at Oakland last week, while her husband attended to business mat- ters In Portland. Dr. Benj. F. DeVore, of Grants Pass, with his wife, formerly Mist Leo la Purviance, are proud pos sessors of a son, who arrived Jan. 20, 1909. Dr. DeVore is a Yoncalla hoy and has, with his wife, many warm friends here who are glad of his good fortune. A program, under the auspices of the Sunday School, consisting ot songs, recitations, class exercises and a short address by the pastor, will be rendered at the Methodist church next Sunday evening, Jan. 31.
