Thursday's train from the south did not reach here until this afternoon, No. 14, the flyer, being 22 years late and No. 16. 'the overland, about 15 hours late. A stub train from Ashland came through Thursday night about on the regular schedule of No. 16. The flyer due here this afternoon, was held by the washout of a bridge at Wyo, between Tehama and wood land, Calif., and therefore has been annulled. They will probably trans fer and get through some time Sat urday. A special coach was run from Ashland to Roseburg Thursday, reaching here about 7 p. m. This morning's southbound flyer was bad ly delayed by soft track bed and reached here about H o'clock. No dining car being available they stop ped at Eugene for breakfast. She Is survived by her hus band and six children, the oldest be ing Mrs. Van Gilbert; and the young est aged only about two weeks. W. A. Smlck was appointed to preach 'and declare the pulpit va cant on Sunday evening, January 31st. The future supply of the pul pit was left in the hands of the Ses sion, the members of which are now seeking another pastor. Dr. Town send goes to Portland soon after February 1st, to take the pastorate of the Millard Avenue church, on the ML Scott car line. His family will remain In Roseburg, however, until next next May or June. The de parture of Dr. Townsend and fam ily will be sincerely regreted by their many friends here. The Washington Post has a special saying the Fulton wing of the republican party has a plan to prevent Chamber lain being elected, and that Ormsby Mcllarg, representative of Chulrman Hitchcock, and Fulton'B brother, have a plan by which the senate com mittee on privileges and elections may reject Chamberlain by having members of tho legislature make a record that they voted for Chamber lain because of a pledge to the peo ple, not because he was their per sonal choice. The Post says, editorially: "It Is hardly likely tho senate will question Chamberlain's right to a seat. The democrats of the Benate certainly will not object to the action of the Oregon legislature. If the republl cans should do so they would be chnrged with acting with partisan motives and their objection would do more harm than good. Floods ire still working havoc In the three Pacific coast states, but California Is faring much worse than Oregon ar Washington. At Portland the river Is still a rag ing torrent, but has ceased to rise. Navigation by river craft Is attended by great dllllculty and danger owing to the tremeduus current. Several houseboats and a portion of tho public bnth went adrift last night and were wrecked. Upper tributaries of the Willam ette are reported falling and there Is little damnge reported from the up per valley. The great ice gorge which made such a spectacle at Celllo has broken up and gone out. The Columbia Itiver is filled with running Ice and driftwood all the way down to As toria. Vessels cannot be moved and are tied up awaiting better condi tions. A 12-foot tide In the lower harbor yesterday washed over portions of the railroad below Astoria and flood ed large tracts of land. Damage of a similar kind Is report from Ft. Stevens. Anothor terrific downpour of rain In the Palouse has created fresh havoc with Northern Pacific trncks. Small streams are running bank full and flooding adjacent lands. The lower portion of Stockton, Cal Is flooded and It Is feared the inundation may extend. Four houses were destroyed at Angels by the wa ters, and a bridge was washed away. Reports from Sacramento are that a heavy storm Is raging, thnt Sher man Island 1b flooded and that a rail road brldgo has been wrecked. HOOD RIVER, Or., Jan. 21 Hood River's new city council lost no time In getting Itself on record ns favor ing municipal ownership of light and water by passing nn ordinnnce cull ing for a special election March 25 to vote bonds for that purpose. Should 'the bond movement carry, about $200,000 will be placed In the hands of tho city council for the con struction of light and wator sys tems. Another measure taken under consideration by tho new councllmen was one requiring p'oolrooms and cigar storeB to close at 9 o'clock dur ln,; the week, except Saturdny, when they will be allowed to remain open until 12, and nlso requiring them to close on Sunday.
