In 1870 there were 373,332 women agricultural laborora lu this cou ' try. In 1900 there were 663.209 Women still do Bome hard work But the gala In the number of wo men agricultural laborers, uftor all was only 7 2 per cent. Compare U with the gain In the number of women "fanners, planters and overseers." In 1870 there were 22,681. In 1900 there were 307 706. It was a gain of 1266 per cent In other words, while the women la borers, the subordinates, failed double their numbers during the per lod from 1870 to 1900, the women farmers, , planters and overseers, the persons In authority, doubled their numbers more than 12 times over. In the year 1811 ,out of every 100 employes In the cotton mills of Am erica, 87 were women. In 183 they were 68. By 18T.0 they had do cllned to 64. My 1870 they had de dined still further to 68. lu 1900 they were only 49. And cotton la tho great historical factory trade for women! In all the five "Factory trades" so far mentioned In silk, In boots and shoes, In printing, In wool and I cottou women were less Imiiortnnt In 1900 than they had been 60 ycare before. Grants Pass Outlook: Some well known railroad promoters are ex pected In Almeda within a very short time and it Is expected that a party of civil engineers will run the line from Almeda to the lower bridge on the Applegate. Grants Pass people It Is learned are very anxious to have the road run on the south side of the river and Join with the pro posed line to the Illinois country. When the Collins party were here a few weeks ago they admitted that there was a paying business at Al meda alone and It is now claimed that Mr. Collins will build to this point and it may be that this branch of the road will be built up to the crossing named before the extension Is made to the Illinois country. The tonnage is here and waiting for a railroad. ' A Horrible Hold-Up.
