Forestry bulletin recently Issued

Few people have anything like a
clear idea of the amount of forest
wealth left in this country . Those
who think at all about this natural
resource which has assisted in mater
ial development since the landing of
the first settlers are usually too much
Influenced by the condition of that
particular state or section In which
they are most familiar.
If they live In a much deforested
or a treeless region, the people usu
ally Imagine that the country's tim
ber supply Is even more limited than
is actually the fact; on the other
hand, with those whose homes are
located In a section where a pinch in
timber has not been experienced, the
feeling Is likely to be altogether the
other way, and some become so In
different at times as to think that
there 1b really not much reason to
worry about a timber problem. Both
can profit by a reading of the actual
facts.
The forests of the United States
now cover about 660 million acres,
qr about one-fourth of the land of
the whole country. The original for
ests covered not less than 860 mil
lion acres, or nearly one-half.
The forests owned by the govern
ment cover one-fourth of the total
forest area, and contain one-fifth of
all timber standing. Forests pri
vately owned cover three-fourths of
the area, and contain four-fifths of
the standing timber. Besides having
three times the area and four times
the forests, the tlmberland privately
owned is generally more valuable.

stop forest fires at a total yearly cost

Returns to Stutes.
During the last fiscal venr enrllnir
June 30, the United States Forest
Service Issued to settlers in the neigh
borhood of National Forests In west
ern states over 30,000 "free use"
permits, undor which the settlers re
ceived free about 264,000 cords of
firewood, posts, poles and snwloga,
worth $169,320, or about 64 cents
per cord a very low valuation.
Besides this, the different states re
ceived for school and road purposes
25 per cent of the Income from tho
National Forests amounting last year
to $447,064. The direct return to
the states In lieu of taxes on the 147
million acres, the estimated area of
unpatented land In the National For
ests, amounted then in the last year
to $616,384 in cash and "free use"
timber.
In 1907, the total of "free use"
material and money paid over
amounted to about $253,400. The
Increase of the amount given to the
states from 10 per cent to 25 per
cent of course is largely responsible
for the large return In 1908, but
even hnd this percentage not been
changed a good Increase would have
been shown, despite the demoraliza
tion of tho lumber business caused
by the financial flurry. In fact, this
increase may be looked for un to
many times the present amount as
tho demand for timber Increases and
the forests are developed more and
more.
