Black, convicted of attempting to kill
nnd rob Dr. Clurence Robertson, was
sentenced today by Judge Burnett of
tho Marion county circuit court to a
term of 10 years in the Btate peni
lentlury. The penalty Imposed Is the
maximum.
Dr. Robertson was shot while en
deavoring to evade a holdup at the
hands of Black ono evening as the
physician was making a professional
call. Black was convicted on strong
circumstantial evidence.

During the present week, nine new
cases have been added to the civil
docket ot the circuit court, which op
en in regular session next Monday
Two of these are divorce cases and
one of them Is of a mildly sensation
al nature. The remainder are actions
for money and suite Involving proper
ty ownership.
Bertha I). High vs. Herbert 71.
High is the title of oue of the most
salacious divorce suits that haB been
filed here for some time. The plain
tiff is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E
H. Smith, of this city, and the de
fendant Is a Southern Pacific brake
man, now working out of ' Albany.
They were married In Itoseburg, Dee.
24, 1902, and bave a son, ot wbom
the mother asks custody. - In he
complaint, Mrs. High accuses her hus
band of very dissolute conduct, spe
cifically a habit of seeking the com
pany of other women and Indulging
In illicit relations with them. She
mentions four different women In the
course of her allegations, to one of
whom, she avers, her husband gaie
two of her rings and attempted to
give her necklace, also. With this
party, who hails from Glendale, Mrs.
High alleges her husband had a very
gay old time Che also says that he
went driving with two Inmates of a
bawdy he use of this city and walked
on the sti cots with one of them while
drunk. Once when Mrs. High was
sick In bee! h-r husband cried, and ne
hastened to reassure her that he wue
not cryng f-.r her, but because h!s
Glendale "affinity" had broken her
ankle. High's unbearable conduct
reached a climax, however, when, ac
cording to the complaint, he sug
gested to his wife that she enter a
house of ill-fame.
Martha E. Montgomery is suing
Wm. L. Montgomery for a divorce
because they are cousins. Contrary
to law, however, she does not allege
that Bhe was led into a state of con
sanguinity by fraud when Bhe mar
ried Montgomery at Grants Pass In
September, 1904. This defect in the
complaint Is probably due to the In
experience of her attorney, Claud L.
Devore, who has stated his case on
less than one-halt page of legal-size
pa tier.
T. N. Humphreys has sued J. D.
and John Hamilton to recover on a
$.100 promissory note, originally the
property of B. M. Armltage. Besses
the principal, interest of $81.45 is
asked.
J. H. Price has sued Lydla Das
comb to foreclose a mortgage for
$2000 on land at Ruckles.
C. E. Ilogue vs. Minnie and C. F.
Ambbary is the title ot another tore
closure suit. The land Is situated In
sees. 24 and 25, 29-4, and the amount
Is $2000.
11. J. Russell petitions to quiet title
to 99 acres of land near Wilbur. The
dofendantB are W. Leatherman, L.
M. Smith and C. W. Halght.
R. B. Dixon asks judgment for
$4 00 from J. T. Spaugh, because a
fire started by the engine of Spaugh's
threshing machine burned up 800
bushels of oats and 100 bushels of
wheat belonging to Dixon, who al
leges that the Are was due to
Spaugh's "negligence and careless
ness." Clarence and Frceland Cornutt,
comprising itbe Cornutt Lumber Co.,
have sued the Sterling Lumber Co.
for $1710, alleged to be due on an
accounting.
Emma E. Fassett has levied attach
ment on 60 1-3 acres of land at Bos
well Springs In course of suit against
Mrs. K. E. Hoswoll to recover $200
on a promissory note. -

Eugene Guard: "The people of
Gardiner, Douglas county,' remarked
a traveling man here last night,
"want a county of their own, as well
as Drain and Cottage Grove. They
think that western Lane and western
Douglas might combine to the better
ment of the two sections, which are
now entirely under different organiza
tions." "Gardiner." he continued In ex
planation, "Is the seaport ot Douglas
county and Florence of Lane county.
The character of both towns Is about
the same, and the Bectlons surround
ing each other are also very similar.
Neither section has any vital Interest
In common with any of the Interior
points of either Douglas or Lane
county, and another coast county sim
ilar to Coos would surely be more
satisfactory to the people of both dis
tricts. "
A bystander wondered what the
'inpulatlon of such a county would
he, and tho visitor admitted that It
would be small. However, he thought
by Inking In Drain and that section
in one side, and drawing the line in
Lane county east of Mapleton some
listanre. the property valuation
ould be equal to one-halt of that
of 4he whole of Douglas county at

Gardiner would be the logical
ounty seat. That port would be near
Florence and Sluslaw districts, and

PURCHASE SCHOOL GROUNDS.

At a meeting of the Board of
Trustees of the Itoseburg School dis
trict Friday, the action of the recent
school meeting was confirmed, in re
lation to the purchase of grounds
for the West Roseburg and Riverside
school. They therefore purchased of
A. J. Bellows, of West Roseburg, and
Louis Barzee, ot Riverside, the two
respective tracts of land heretofore
specified for the purposes named, for
the sum of $500 each.
In relation to the purchase of four
lots adjoining the High School
grounds in the Waite Addition, for
$1200, the proposal was not favored
by the school board at the price
named and the purchase was not
made. It ia probable that arrange
ments will be made for the erection
of suitable school buildings on the
tracts purchased during the coming
summer. Schools are now being con
ducted In each of these wards In
buildings temporarily leased for the
purpose.
P. Bond, the real estate agent, re
ports the sale by S. 8. Swenlng, now
of Medford, of the former McWil
llatns residence property, on PMzer
Street, to Miss Katherlne and Russell
Dunham, for $1,125.
