The Information wab contained In a letter from tho president In res ponse to the request of Senator Hale for a statement of the activities of Secret Service men. Extended re plies were made by the various de partments and all of these were for warded to llnle by tho president. They have not been made public and Halo announced that they would not be given out until aftor they hud boen considered by a subcommittee of the committee on appropriations, which will be charged with the duty of acting on that portion of the presi dent's annual message relating to the Secret Sorvlce. Previous to that attack Tillman had Introduced a resolution directing the attorney-general to prosecute suits against an Oregon railroad corporation that had received land grants for a lino from California points to Portland, Or. "Re member Carmaek," is the rallying cry of the temperance forces of Ten nessee, who are gathering In the cap ital during the first week of the leg islative session to demand the pas sage of a prohibition bill that will drive every saloon from the state. Only three Tennessee big cities are now left In which liquor can be le gally Bold, and there Is cvory pros pect that before long Memphis, Nash ville and Chattanooga will be ren dered "dry." The assassination of Senator Car mack, the editor of a local newspap er, by a political enemy, has been made an Issue by the friends of state wide prohibition. Carmack was last year a candidate for the gubernator ial nomination against Governor Pat terson. He ran on a prohibition plat form, but was defeated by a narrow margin after a heated campaign In which tho liquor traffic was the prin cipal Issue. He did not allow his defeat at the polls to end the cam paign but kept the prohibition ques tion to the forefront through editor ials In the newspaper of which he was the editor. It was this devoted advocacy of the temperance cause, declare hlB friends, that led to his tragic death In a duel on the streets of Nashville. Now he Is being hail ed as a martyr to prohibition, and a state-wide law prohibiting the manu facture and sale of liquor Is urged as the most fitting monument to his memory. DeHpite reverses they Buffered in the first conflicts with the liquor ele ment, the leaders of the temperance army are confident that public opin ion will force the present legislature to pass a prohibition law. The liquor dealers have not yet given up hope that Tennessee will be saved from the Impending fate of prohibition, and the battle between the ' wets and drys" will be fought to a finish. Opponents of prohibition aBsert that the attempt to make the Carmack murder an Issue Is absurd. and that the assassination of the former senator was due to personal differences and had nothing to do with the liquor controversy. John Sherr'ett, who died at his home on Smith River, Douglas county, Ore gon, Dee. 28, aged 78 years, was born near Canton, O., April 26, 1830. He crossed the plains to Oregon In 1851 and In the spring of 1ST, 2 settling at I Scottsburg, then the metropolis of I southern Oregon, where for a time ho drove a dray, the team being oxen, j He siient some time in the mines, i both In Jackson county and on Snl I mon River, Idaho.
