E. N. Andrews of the Sutherlln
Land and Water Co., has returned
from the east, where he established
colonization agencies and distributed
advertising literature. One of the
places which he visited was the na
tional corn show at Omaha. Neb., and
here he made the most of his oppor
tunity to let people know of the ad
vantages of Douglns County. Mr. An
drews made no direct effort to secure
colonists on the trip, because of the
nbsence of special railroad rates.

absolutely refused to consider the
proosed resignation which Mr. Rich
ardson submitted because of a hand
some offer made him by the Consolid
ated Commercial Clubs of Denver.
The executive committee, in nddltion
to turning down the resignation, vot
ed to supplement the exploitation
work which has been done the past
year by a substantial increase In the
appropriation for that department
for 1909.

Marsh field Times: Mr. and Mrs.
F. K. Getting entertained a number
of friends Thursday night at their
home In Marsh fie Id. It was a cele
bration of their wooden wedding. The
company played bridge and supper
was served after the game. The
house was elaborately decorated for
the Christmas season, festoons of
mistletoe and greens being used.
Albany Democrat: Mr: . L. D.
Knighton a member of a prominent
pioneer family, a native of Oregon
died at his home near Peoria. He
was a man of excellent character
life-long resident of the valley. He
leaves a wife and several children,
and many others to mourn his death.
Mrs. Knighton is a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Maj. Johnson, a sister of
James Johnson, of this city. (De
ceased was a brother-in-law of Dr.
J. P. Johnson, the dentist, of this
city.)
At a largely attended road district
meeting in West Roseburg, Monday
a special tax of two mills was voted
unnulmotiKly. The taxable property
of the district amounts to $149,000,
and on this sum a levy of 2 mills
will rnise nearly $i00. The Glendale
and Clalesvllle district? also voted
special road tax on Monday. The
amount of the levy at Glendale was
not learned, but that at Galesvllle is
7 mills. Hut, three districts out of
tho 27 which presented the county
court with special tax resolutions are
yet to hear from. Thoy are Glide,
Oak Creek and Gun tor.

O. Morris was accidentally shot !
and killed at her homo one and a half
miles north of this city Sunday after
noon. A charge from a shotgun in
the hands of a tt-year-olil son, who
did not know tho gun wns loaded,

very short time.
This fatality is the direct result
of the forgetfuMiess of Mr. Morris,
the victim's husband, who, on re
turning from a hunting trip, In id his
loaded gun on tho tnble. Tho young
son, who, It seems had often been
permitted to clean the firearm, pick
ed it up for thut purpose. The gun
went off and Mrs. Morris, who stood
by the stove, less than ten feet dis
tant, received the full charge.
HAD 8 CENTS; GETS 8 YEARS,
OAKLAND. Calif. Dec. 28. One
year in prison for each copper penny
he had stolen was the punishment
meted out to George Gross this
morning by Superior Judge llrown.
He pleaded guilty to tho burglary of
a store about a month ago, Thomas
Drlscoll was the companion in the
robbery, and tho two of them se
cured some tobacco and eleven pen
nies. Eight of the stolen pennies
were found on Gross when ho was
arrested; and the judge sentenced
him to eight years' imprisonment In
San Quentln. Gross, who is but 20
years old, pleaded guilty and asked
that sentence bo passed at once.
