merchant are taking steps to Induce
the owners of the steamer Arago
which recently begnn to ply between
Portland and Tillamook, to drop In
to the former coast ports on both

present arrangements It Is said that
practically all of the commerce from
that eectlon goes to Han rrnnclsco.
With regular stenmshtp Bervlce to
Portland It Is the consennus of onin

man, says:
"I am certain that the merchants
of Portland would secure much valu

go in thoro regularly. Resides I
think It would 1)0 a paying proposi

PORTLAND, Or., Dec. 28. Undis

of this announcement may te seen
from the fact thut tho $100,000 ar

the last legislature but was snowed

at the general polls, aroused the
most strenuous and bitter opposition
from tho Stale (irnnge nnd tho Tax

measure carried but two counties In
the state, the reason being, so It. if
now stated, that It was not speclllc

snino tlmo did not appeal to tho vol

PARIS, Dec. 28. Although gen

the Imposing strength of France's fin

France's fortune Ib growing steadily
as the result of an annual savings

must seek investment abroad.
M. Leroy Deuulleu's figures show
that France now receives $:ti0,000,

holdings. Ho estimates the present
wealth of the French people at $45,

for every mnn, woninn nnd child, and
as the estimate Ib bused upon de
clared succession taxes, it is admit
tedly much below the real figures.

Scared Out of the Duel.
One day M. Kdmoud About called
upon Oris lor, the most celebrated fenc
ing master of bis day. "I am In a
quandary," said About "I allowed
myself yesterday the pleasuro of a
Joke In bad taste, and a duel Is to be
the result. I know nothing whatever
about fencing, and, as you can Bee, 1
am fat. Will you give me a lesson, so
that I may nut make myself too ridicu

About proved a very poor pupil. On
his way out he saw a photograph of
Orisler. "I suppose," he said, "I must
not ask you for one of these?" "With
the greatest pleasure," said the fencing
master. And. with a chuckle, (irlsier
wrote across tho photograph, "To M.
I'Mmond About, the best pupil I have
over had." A few hours afterward the
seconds of About's adversary called
on the writer, saw the photograph on
the innutelplece and, fearing for their
friend at the hands of so redoubtable
a swordsman, arranged the a flair with

How Henry Irving Wanted to Die.
"What have I got out of It?" said
Henry, stroking his chin and smiling

with courtesy. Always he was so
courteousalways his actions, like
this little one of kissing my hand, were
so beautifully timed. They came Just
before the shken words and gave
them peculiar value.
"That's not a bad summing up of It
all," I said. "And the end bow would
you like that to come?"
"How would I like thnt to come?"
He repeated iny question lightly, yet
meditatively too. Then he was silent
