Now the days will begin to grow
longer and we'll aoon be looking to
ward spring.
Even a blind man can aee that
Roseburg needs paved streets. Every
road district adjoining town has
voted a Bpeclal tax for road Improve
ment. We MUST have good streets
to correspond, before another win
ter.
The Roseburg Commercial Club
after a year of most intense activity,
will dedicate their new club rooms on
Tuesday, January 12th. There will
be representatives present from vari
ous sections of the state.
Don't forget that it Is the duty of
every roader of this paper to write
to some friend at a distance and tell
him of the advantages of Oregon
both as to climate and production
Remember that the people of the
older stateB, where the weather lr
cold, are hovering around the Are and
have lota of time to read get busy.
Naturally, 1009 will be a great
travel year for the Pacific Northwest
The most advantageous rates are In
this direction. All of the great rail
roads of the country are going to
bend their efforts toward presenting
the resources of this portion of the
United States throughout the East
Canada and Europe. The Portland
Itoso Show and the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific
exposition will be two Import
ant features and railroad men In all
the large centers of population pre
dict an enormous travel.
(JKKAT WHITE WAYH.
There is agitation for a "Oreal
White Way" between Milwaukee
Wis., and Chicago. It is to be a broad
macadam of perfect smoothness ovei
which automobiles and other pleas
ure vehicles niny speed under the besi
and safest conditions. The signifl
cance of the plan is that hard-headed
capitalists are behind the project
and In financing it, they will secure
possession of Inrge bodies of Innd
along the roadway, and rely upon tin
advance In value for their return foi
constructing the road. This hint ol
how a good rond will add to the value
of abutting land should be siiKgestlvi
In Oregon. (Ireat Whlto Ways In
every direction throughout the state
would quickly pay for themselves
would enrich the state, and add Im
measurably to the comfort and happl
ness of Oregon life.
The wonder Is thnt human effnrl
Is not more directed in this avenur
. which is so momentous for a more
perfect soclnl and economic condi
tion. Oroat White Ways, such as
that proponed between Milwaukee
and Chicago, are almost as much of
a stumulus to civilization nnd happy
living as are the colleges and schools.
Even the nnclent Iteunans understood
this, and In their remd building far
surpassed us with all our boasted
civilisation. Why do not our people
study the subject and let the light el
(Ireat Whlto Ways break In upon
them! la not the subject one
through which the coming logtxlnt

A mighty service for Oregon? r

IRVINE. Ky. Dec .26 The Jury
in the case of Beach Hargls, charged
with the mureler of his father. Judge
James J. Hargls, reported Its Inabil

discharged. The Jury stood nine for
aceiulttal and three for conviction.
Ueach Hargls had tieen on a de

the murder of Judge Hargls, and he
had finally been brought back to
Jackson. For some days the neigh

been dragging the boy to the streets
of the wild little mountain town.
Beach entered his ratner s store
and, after a few words with the
Judge, grappled with him. rney ten

the ludae's own pistol the boy fired
several shots Into the body of the
prostrate man.

The defendant's mother testified
that the Judge had early taught the
boy bad habits, and when Beach was
a child had given nitu wnisaey anu

In the Tenth Congressional District.
Ills ministers occupied all the county
offices, he was himself democratic

Cockrtlls, and others disputed the
scepter of the feudal king, and paid
the penalty with their lives. This
summary and violent rule bred the
school of murderers and bad men
who gave to their county the world
known title of "Bloody Breathitt."
One of them. Curt Jctt, called by
hla picturesquely-speaking neighbors
the "wild dog of Breathitt," is serv

and others have fled the state or are
living quietly since the death of their

record for her age for rapid short

Miss Olson's record is considered
phenomenal, aa the matter read to

a transcript of proceedings taken
from the court files and which was
entirely strange to her.

A. J. Haydon. living on Flint St

"I have always enjoyed the best of
health until Beveral years ago, when
my kidneys became disordered.
do not know the cause of the trouble
but can only say that the kidneys
failed to perform their functions
properly and caused me much annoy
ance by the too frequent passages
of the kidney secretions. This trou
ble was especially bothersome at
night, often obliging me to arise sev
eral times. The clnimB maele for
Doan's Klelney PIUb prejudiced me in
their favor and I procured a supply
at MarBtcrs & Co's. drug store. They
helped me from the first, correcting
the action of the secretions and caus

I continued taking them nnd as a
result, am now without the least sign
