HENEY DENIES REPORT.
Decluros Government is Not Paying
Him For Graft' Prosecutions.
LOS ANGELES, Calif., Dec. 19.
"There Is distinct belief here thnt
Francis J. Heney Is paid from the
secret service funds of the govern
ment for hiB work in Snn Francisco,"
says Harry C. Carr, Washington cor
respondent of the Times, In an ar
ticle printed here yesterdny.
"As a sequel of the Aldrlch reso
lution Introduced- in the senate the
secret service system will be thor
oughly Investigated and various dark
mysteries laid bare," continues Carr.
"The resolution has special reference
to 'special attorneys' employed In the
'investigation of possible crimes.'
"The big question before the sen
ate was whether the president of the
United States had the right to use
government money to send specinl
prosecutors Into California on a pure
ly local city fight. , The question did
not come out from hiding, but the
significance of it was appreciated by
the senate body as a whole."
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 19.
Francis J. Heney, in a statement to
the United Press, yesterday denied
flatly and emphatically that Presi
dent Roosevelt had anything to do
with his activities in the San Fran
Cisco graft prosecutions.
Referring to the articles by the Los
Angeles Times' correspondent, Henoy .
said: ' j
"It Is absolute rot. There Isn't
the shadow of a reason for making
such statements.
"Any statement that I received
money from the government for my '
work In San Francisco is false. '
President Roosevelt had nothing to
do with my coming to San Francisco
to take up the fight. Neither did he
have anything to do with Detective
William J. Hums' coming here. Mr.
Burns resigned his position with the
