and In many localities blizzards are
raging. In Oregon there is nothing
but sunshine and sometimes a little
- . fog, but what is that to four feet of
w snow and a gale of wind blowiug
at the rate of ninety miles an hour,
which is liberally seasoned with par
ticles of ice? The people of this
state do not appreciate all they have
in the way of climate and It would
do some of them a great deal of good
to spend a winter or two in the Mis
souri river valley, where they have
real winter weather. Ex.

OREGON' GETS 935,834.30.
WASHINGTON', D. C, Dec. 10.
The general land office has made pub
lic its account with Oregon for the
year ending June 30, 1908. Gross
proceeds from the sale of public
lands were $540,881.58, from which
amount Is deducted the pro rata
share of expenses chargeable to the
state of $10,849.26. making the net
proceeds $517,080.09 or which
amount the state Is entitled to 5 per
cent or $25,854.30.
DON'T WANT NAMES IX PAPERS
The Lane County Medical Society
at its last meeting, passed the follow
ing resolutions.
"Resolved, that members of the
Line County Medical Society forbid
their names being used In connection
with the reports of any medical or
surgical cases in local papers.
"That the secretary Le Instructed
to notify all members of the society
and all local papers and the Journal
of the American Medical Associa
tion." BUILDING IX COTTAGE GROVE.
Messrs. Dunbar & O'Lone will
erect a three-story brick building
on their property, with a basement.
Plans are now In preparation, and a
thoroughly up-to-date structure will
be built. The basement will be of
concrete and the three stories of
pressed brick. A fine glass front will
be put In and an electric elevator
and steam heat will also come In
with the modern utilities of the store.
The basement will contain the groc
ery department,, the ground floor the
dry goods and the clothing, the sec
ond lloor the ladies' ready-to-wear
garments and shop rooms, and the
third Hood will contain furniture and
carpets. The building, aside from
the ground purchase. Is estimated to
cost between $8700 and $9000 com
plete, and will be another substantial
Improvement to this growing little
city.
The Garnian-Hemenway Co. will
move to their newly acquired prcp
erty about the first of February. Mr.
Lincoln will move as soon as he finds
a location and workmen will remodel
the Interior of the present, building,
placing In a plate glass front and a
balcony around the room. Work on
the new brick will commence about
the 1st of May, the coming spring, as
scon as the weather permits. The I
piesent structure will be moved to
the side street and Garnien-Ilemen-way
Co. will continue doing busi
ness in it until their new building Is
finished. This is nn unexpected
change In the building contemplated
in this city, and with the present
building In course of construction
and those to start In the sluing, a
greater activity than the place has
ever before seen will have started.

family weut to Roseburg this after
noon on a short visit Hon. H.
B. Miller, U. S. consul general at
Yokahama, Japan, after a visit of
several weeks in Eugene and Port
laud, went to Albany today to visit
his brother, Hon. F. J. Miller, this
afternoon and will leave that city
tonight for California to Join his
family at San Mateo. He expects to
leave Sun Francisco for his post at
Yokohama about the first of March.

. ANOTHER PIONEER DEAD.
Isaac Wa.tk.lns, old pioneer of
Douglas county, died Dec. 8, 1908, at
the home of his son, John Wutkins,
living near Comstocks.
Mr. W'atkinB was born in Lima
county. Ohio, Sept. 12, 1820. He
crossed the plains in 1852 and again
In 18t!4, settling on Elk Creek in the
fall of 1S65. Ho was married three
times, in 1841 to Miss Mary (.loans, in
184 8 to -Miss Mary Merfey and lu
1886 to Mrs. Eliza Hoffman.
Ten children survive him as fol
lows: Mrs. Sarah E. Beuuett. Mrs.
.Mary Dennett, Mrs. Susan Drlscoll,
Mrs. Eliza Hose, James, ltenjamin L.,
John Christopher, William and Lash
Walking.
Funeral services were conducted
at the cemetery In Youcalla ou Dec.
9, 1908, by the pastor of the Meth

Delbert L. Guard and Miss Irene
Foote, both of Drain, were married
at Eugene Monday.
Mrs, Dammrose, of Hayhurst, had
the misfortune Tuesday of this week
to fall and break one of her arms.
A. Hkkethier Is now at the Na
tional Soldiers' Home in Los Angeles,
where he expects to spend the bal
ance of his days.
A game of football is billed to be
pulled off at Drain on Christmas Day,
Dec. 25, between the Koaeburg and
second team of Oralu.
Her many friends will be pleased
to learn that Mrs. Juke Sawyers was
able to return to her home near Elk
ton this week from Eugene, where
she had been under trenlment for
some time In the hospital. She has
not enjoyed good health since her
baby was born rive months ago. Her
husband met her at Drain Sunday.
Uncle Jake Kltchey has gone to
Cottage Grove, where he will make
his home with his son, Isaac. Non
