ick A. Hyde, of San Francisco, recent
ly convicted of conspiracy to defraud
the United States of large tracts of
land In Oregon and Washington, was
today sentenced In tho District Crim
inal court to pay a flno of $ 10,000
and to serve two years In the peuitoh
tlary at Moundsvllle, W. V., the mnxl
nium penalty under the luw.
Joost II. Schneider, of Tucson,
Ariz., an employe of Hyde, and con
victed with him, was fined $10111) and
sentenced to one year and two
months in the penitentiary.
Doth noted appeals to the District
Count of Appeals, llydo was released
on (20,000 bail and Schneider on
10,000.
The prosecution of Hyde and
Schneider, together with John A.
Benson and Henry P. Dimond, who
were acquitted, following the Inves

opposition and yet to be beaten was
the unpleasant experience or H. S.
Itadclifr In the city election here yes
terday, In which the name or Colonel
E. liofor, editor of the Capital Jour
nal, was written in on the ballot.
Itadcllrf was supposed to have had no
opposition till ithe votes were count
ed. Colonel Hofer defeated Itadclifr
by over 60 to 58. It was the great
est surprise that was sprung In the
municipal election, particularly so to
Col. Horer, who was not a candidate
and had rerused to allow his name
to be used in that connootlon. ' Tho
Joke was perpetrated by the Salem
Herman Verien, or which Colonel
Horer Is president, which worked in
unison to bring about the result.

The amendment to the city charter

Eugene Guard, Dec. 8: Yesterday
arternoon Ray Llttlcfleld changed his
plea or not guilty to that of guilty
and was sentenced to thirty days In
the county Jail for selling liquor.
Job. Jacobs entered a plea of guilty
to another charge or selling liquor
and will he sentenced tomorrow.
Several other liquor cases were
continued for the term.
CyruB Woolridge was sentenced
to 15 days in the county jail this
movnlng on a llquor-selllng charge.
James Carhan was sentenced to
pay a fine of 1300 and costs on the
same charge.
The case of the state vs. Charles
Mayhew, charged with a like offense,
was dismissed for lack of prosecu
tion. This case has been In the
counts for over a year. Each time It
has been set for trial Mayhew has
been sick or the prosecuting wit
nesses could not be found. As the
principal witnesses for the state have
left the county and their whereabouts
are unknown, the case was stricken.
