HOT SPRINGS, Va., Nov. 18.
That President-elect W. H. Taft en
tertains a vigorous determination
that the forthcoming revision of the
tariff shall be thorough, made In
good faith and In accordance with
the pledge of the party. Is evidenced
dally In the earnestness with which
he talks on this subject with his po
litical cnllurs.
His Interest goes to the extent of
seeking detailed Information regard
, lag the personnel and prospective or
ganization of the 61st Congress. It
is necessary for him as the head of
the party and responsible to the Am
erican people for the carrying out of
Its promises to begin his work at
once by Insuring, If possible, such an
organization of the next congress as
shall make It possible to work In
complete harmony.

ed determination yesterday to con
suit many party leaders upon many
subjects, and he talked today with
Representative Burton for an hour
and a half. The Speakership ques

were discussed. Mr. Taft said he
had asked Mr. Burton to resume his
conference Saturday.
Mr, Burton Is an announced can
didate for the United Stules senate
from Ohio.

VICTORIA, B. C, Nov. 19. The
following remarkable story comes
from Nanalmo, whero the fish are on
exhibition and have been photogrnph
ed. The annual run of herring at
that place Is now on and It was In
this connection that -the story devel
oped. A veteran fisherman, Clmeon
Day, caught a monstor cod Just out
side Nanalmo harbor, and brought
tho fish to tho city, where It was on
exhibition at the Voudoine Hotel.
The cod was of extraordinary size and
out of all proportion to the ordinary
specimens of the genus.
On being dissected a most remark
ablo state of things was discovered.
Inside the big fellow was another rod
about 20 Inches In length, and Inside
this was a rockuod 18 inches In
length and Inside this again was an
other 10 Inches In length. To make
the story completo, liutido the Inner
most cod wss the herring which Day
had used as bait.
The big flsh was dissected at the
Vcmtome Hotel In the presence of i
large crowd. This latest freak of
the deep Is still there on exhibition.

Nuveen ft Co. are demanding In
terest on money that they have never
furnished and will not be called upon

the American criminal laws have
very serious defects, and that If the
American people wish to rule they
must "thoroughly, rationally and
honestly recast their criminal laws,"
was asserted by Attorney Oeneral C.
J. Bonaparte, In his address as presi
dent of the National Municipal
League, before the annual meeting of
the body In this city last night. He
declared that the gravest and least
excusable deficiency In our criminal
law is found In Its endless delays,
and added that If the people shall
demand prompt and unquestioning
obedience to the people's laws, they

sancitlon In swift, euro and grievous
retribution for all rebellious to those

HOP GROWERS ASK DUTY.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 19. At the
hearing before the tariff commission
today Herman Klaber, of Portland,
Ore., and E. C. Horst, of San Fran
cisco, representing 3600 hopgrowers,
presented a schedule for a duty of
24 cents a pound .claiming that "the
hop Industry la on Its last legs." On
ly one other representative of the hop
growers was heard. The attitude of
the committee was not apparently
favorable to the proposed advance. -
The present tariff 1b 12 cents per
pound.

C. Shallenberger, Nebraska's governor-elect,
la under a surgeon's care
tonight, as the result of severe In
juries sustained last night during a
Shrlnera' Initiation.
While crossing the "burning
sands" In pursuit of better acquain
tance with the Shrlhers' goa, 'the
governor-elect was propelled down an
Inclined plane, landing at the bottom
with a severe Injury to the ankle that
threatens several months' use of
crutches.
He showed his gameness following
the Injury by attending a banquet
afterward and making a speech. He
hobbled about for three hours before
a physician was called.
