season' at Santa' Cruz, Calif., their
winter, quarters,, on .Nov. 8, havinR
started there on March 18th. They

ornia, Oregon. Washington, Idaho,
Montana, British Columbia, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, j

New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and
Arizona. Five days were also spent
in old Mexico towns.
C. B. Cannon, the local real estate
dealer, has on display in his spacious
office, an assortment of apples such
as would surely take the banner prize
at the International Apple Show to be
held In Spokane next month. What Ik
more noteworthy, though, is that the
fruit was raised in Douglas county,
and without irrigation. All of the
leading varieties are represented, and
If there is such a thing as absolute
perfection in that line of horticul
ture It is certainly In evidence. A
number of other high-class products
are also shown, completing an exhibit
that would attract more than usual
attention wherover shown.

The announcement of the Dowager
Empress" death was ofllcial and fol
lowed closely upon the announce
ment that Kwang Hsu, the Emperor,
had died yesterday in the afternoon.
An edict issued this morning
placed upon the throne Prince Pu Yl.
the 3-year-old son of Prince Chun,
the Regent of the Empire, in accord
ance with a promise given by the
Dowager Empress soon after the mar
riage of Prince Chun in 1903. An
edict Issued Friday made Prince Pu
l their presumptive.
Prince Chun, the Regent, has or
dered a hundred days of mourning.
The court will go Into mourning for
three years.
