PORTLAND, Or., Oct. 20. Rich
ard Scott, one of the prominent pio
neurH of Oregon, died at his home
near Mllwauklo this morning, short
ly nfter midnight. Death clulmed Mr
Scott very suddenly and unexpectedly
as ho wns lu his usual health yester
day and attended church lu tho morn
ing. After he had retired for the
night he was stricken, death coming
before the physician summoned
could rench the houso.
Mr. Scott was widely known
throughout the state as a public
spirited and progressive citizen. He
was 6T years of ago at tho time of
his death and was born In Devon
shire, England. He camo to Oregon
from the enst In 1870, making the
Journey by sailing ship around the
Horn.
After a residence of sevoral years
In Portland, Mr. Scott moved to M II
waukio with his family, where he had
since made his home, tho "Dick"
Scott placo being one of the well
known farms of the Willamette Val
ley. Ho took a leading part In the
work of putting the dairy herds of
Oregon on a thoroughbred basis and
owned some of tho best dairy stock
lu the stato. He was a prominent
figure lu the cnmpnlgns of the Start
Dairy Association nnd his influence
In thnt organization did more, per
haps, than any other thing to raise
the standard of the dairy Industry In
the state.
During the Lewis and Clark fair.
Mr. Scott was n member of the state
commission and his services on that
board were invalunblo to the success
of Its work. He also served as coun
ty commissioner for Clnckanins coun
ty and was a school director for
Milwnukle district.

Traders National bank, In this city,
have tripled over that originally an
nounced, nccording to Information
from reliable sources, nnd will reach ,
it is said, a total of over $120,000.
This ' disheartening news puts to
(light any hope of reorganization nnd
clearance of accounts, so that the de
positors could realize something from
their savings. It is figured out thnt
the bank cannot pay 20 cents on the
dollar.
Scriber's alleged defalcations are
varied und Innumerable, ramifying
from forgeries to other shrewd meth
ods of embezzlement. He Is said to
have used certificates of deposit, pre
viously and consecutively numbered,
that were far beyond regular num
bers. Another confession Just made
public Is one that difUoes tho hnste
bo resorted to In covering his trucks.
It Is stated that the night following
the flt'Bt exposure he burned $70,000
In notes, which ho believed wore bud,
but among which wero many valid
papers. Good notes -to the extent of
$20,000, It is said, were consumed by
fire In this way.
