Why Colds arc Dangerous.
Because you have contracted or
dinary coldB and recovered from
them without treatment of any kind,
do not for a moment Imagine thnt
colds nro not dangerous. Everyone
knows that pneumonia and chronic
catarrh hove their origin In a com
mon cold. Consumption 1b not caus
ed by a cold but the cold prepares
the system for the reception and de
velopment of the germs that would
not otherwise have found lodgment.
It Is the same with all Infectious
dlsenses. Diphtheria, scarlet fevor,
measles and whooping cough are
much more likely to bo contracted
when the child has a cold. You will
see from this that more real danger
lurks In a cold than In any other
of the common ailments. The easiest
and quickest way to cure a cold Is
to tnke Chamberlain's Cough Remedy

The
General Demand
of the Well-informed of the World has
always been for a simple, pleasant and
efficient liquid laxative remedy of known
value; a laxative which physicians could
sanction for family, use because its com
ponent part are known to them to be
wholesome and truly beneficial in effect,
acceptable to the system and gentle, yet
prompt, in action.
In supplying that demand with its ex
cellent combination of Syrup of Figs and
Elixir of Senna, the California Fig Syrup
Co. proceeds along ethical lines and relies
on the merit of the laxative for its remark
able success.
That is one of many reasons why
Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna is given
the preference by the Well-informed.
To get its beneficial effects always buy
the genuine manufactured by the Cali
fornia Fig Syrup Co., only, and fur sale
by all leading druggists. Price fifty cents

CLEARING KTl lIBLK FIELDS.
A forestry bulletin Bays:
A problem of considerable import
ance in western Washington and Ore-;
gon has to do with what is called '
"the lumbermen's stubble Held"
tracts from which the timber has!
been cut and which, though desirable
for agriculture, can be cleared of
stumps only at a coat greater than
Che value of the land for agricultural
purposes. Since the lumbermen har
vested their wood crop those lands
have remained unproductive, for fires
have prevented forest reproduction.
It has been suggested that a sav
ing can be made In the cost of pulling
the stumps If the stumps of Douglas
fix are used by distillation for the
production of turpentine, tar, char
coal, and other productB. There is
no question that the fir stumps can
be used In this way, but the saving
effected, according to the rough es
timates which are alone possible un
der the circumstances, would hardly
exceed from one-tenth to one-fifth of
the cost of clearing at present, which
ranges from $150 to $2-25 per acre.
In a few cases, where the land was
not bo Jieavily timbered, the expense
of clearing is a little lesis.
It looks as If the lumbermen's
stubble field can be brought econom
ically under the plow only by the
contrivance of some improved meth
od for handling the stumps, which
are too large for the regulation
stump-puller and are now removed
by dynamite and the donkey engines.
