Mr. and Mra. W. J. Knox, of Penn
sylvania, are recent arrivals In
Hosebur, with the expectation of
locating. Mr. Knox Is an experi
enced civil engineer and spent some

canal. He expects to do a general
line of surveying and engineering
work In this county.

its own protection, Andrew Furuseth,
for 18 ytarB lobbyist for the Am
erican Federation of Labor, before
Congress, In an address before lfiuO
people at the Armory last night vig
orously attacked the Injunction and
severely rebuked Hunlel J. Keefe, in
ternational president of tiie long
shoremen, and one of the vice-presidents
of the American Federation of
Labor.
Mr. Furuseth accused Keefe of be
ing the author of certain anony
mous letters that had been written
to Mr. Taft purporting to have come
from a prominent official of the Am
erican Federation of Labor and as
suring the republican nominee that
organized labor was not united In its
opposition to his candidacy. The
uudionce consisted almost entirely of
voters, not more than 00 women be
ing present.
A hundred or more Socialists at
tended the meeting with the evident
Intention of routing the friends of
organized labor, but they were badly
worsted. Only once was Debs' name
mentioned, and then they responded
with a deafening applause. After
that demonstration the disturbers re
peatedly asked the speaker questions,
but the Han Francisco man was pre
pared for such tactics and effectually
silenced the Interlopers just as fre
quently as they propounded a query.
"Just keep quiet a minute," re
quested Mr. Furuseth, after having
been Interrupted for about the 20th
time, when one of the men wearing
a red button suggested that the only
way for the American laborer to get
any consideration In the way of rem
edial . legislation was to elect a So
cialist congress. "Now, I want to
tell you that you are proceeding on
i mistaken theory at -tills time. A
vote for Debs in this election Is a
vote for Taft, and If you are not fools
vou can see It plainly. Debs has no
more chance of being elected than
any one of you have, and you have
not even been nominated. A vote
Tor Taft will be a vote against the
real hopes of the laboring man In
this campaign."
Mr. Furuseth spoke at consider
able length on the injunction, which
he said under present conditions was
administered largely at the discretion
of the presiding Judge, which was
making for a despotic form of gov
ernment Just as objectionable as any
that Is ruled over by a king. He
reviewed the efforts of the American
Federation of Labor to secure legis
lation by Congress which would curb
the application of the Injunction and
glvo to the laborer the full enjoy
ment of the political freedom assured
him In the Constitution of the Unit
ed States.
Kefers to Itoycott Cam.
Mr. FuruHeth referred to the cele
brated Loewe boycott case in Con
necticut and charged that in this
case the right of organization by la
boring men for their own protection
had been denied by the courts. The
failure of the republican national
convention to adopt the nntl-lnjunc-tlon
plunk submitted by the otllcers
of the American Federation of Labor
was cenmired and credit given the
Democrats for having incorporated
such a plank In their platform at
their Denver convention.
"All we have linked for Is for leg
islation to guard the Individual hu
ll mn liberty of the laborer," said Mr.
Furuseth. "and we are now doing
everything in our power to send Wil
liam Jennings Bryan to the White
louse. We would also give Joe Can
non a vacation and elect a Congress
(hat will protect human liberty and
put Itself as nn Iron wall against all
such revolutionary doctrines as the
injunction. We are not partisans
only so far as to stand for ttie pro
tection of that kind of government
Lincoln had In mind when he made
his Gettysburg speech.
Tribute to Tuft's Ability. .
"Now for a few words about Mr.
Taft. and I assure you I shall not
abus him. Mr. Taft Is an excep
tionally able muu. He Is a big mau
physically; a big man mentally. He
has a big brain, but an entirely dif
ferent conception of government
,from what we think is right. He Is
a Federalist and does not believe In
a government by and for the people.
He believes In government by the
Judges."
The speaker at this point re
viewed the various decisions of Judge
Taft Involving the injunction ques
tion, and charged that In every case
the Republican nominee had ruled
adversely to the interests of the la
boring people.
"Of course," continued Mr. Furu
seth, "we read that Mr. Taft Is re
ceiving letters from prominent labor
officials assuring him that organized
labor Is not unitedly against him."
And what is more, we know who is
writing those letters. You know
who It Is. It Is Daniel J. Keefe. And
who Is Keefe? He was Hanna's man
Friday from the time that Hanna
came Into tht limelight until the
good Lord took him away. It is
said he is to get an office for it.
Well, he ought to have two of
fices. "The American Federation of La
bor does not presume to dictate or
to suggest to Its members how they
shall vote. But here are two pic
tures: One of them Is Taft and Van
Cleave; the other, Bryan and Uom
pers. The situation ie up to you.

urged that inasmuch as there will
likely be four United States supreme
court justices to appoint during the
next four years, with a possibility of
live a majority of the court It is
necessary to elect Taft to make these
appointments. In view of Taft's
well known leanings and In view of
his own record as judge of a federal
court, it Is not surprising that the
trust people and the Van' Cleaves
should regard that an argument for
Taft, but by the same token, It
should be regarded as a better reason
for his defeat by the balance of the
