We, your committee, apiiolnted to
offer Resolutions of Condolence on
the death or Patriarch Robert Rob
ertson, G. H. P., most respecttully
submit the following:
Reputation Is what a man is said
to be; hut Character Is what he really
Is. lu the 11 nine or reputation a man
wears we find the label or what Is
within. Some shipments are made
under raise labels. Hut well we
know that Patriarch Robertson truly
bore a splendid label, whleh always
Btood ror Principle and Character.
Ills Character was the platform on
which his life work was transacted.
It stood the test or years, and even
the clouds of death cannot dissipate
the effect of such a life as his.
A sudden stroke of pain and sor
row came heavily upon us on Sat
urday night, Sept. 19, 19U8. when It
was announced that Patriarch Rob
ertson was dead. Though previously
fearing that the end might come
soon, we were unprepared for It, for
the world is never ready to lose a
good man. A significant thing In
this disaster Is that Patriarch Rob
ertson fell to his last sleep while lit
erally In pursuance ot tho path or
duty, being stricken by death while
on his way to the regular meeting
or Phlletarlan Lodge, No. 8, I. O. O.
F. In a few moments many or those
by whom he was loved gathered at
the scene or sorrow, evincing by their
kind attention to his stricken body
nnd faithful service to his sorrowing
family the warm attachment they felt
for their fallen leader.
While always agreeable among his
associates, the keynote of Patriarch
Robertson's successful leadership, no
doubt, was justice. Justice tempered
with charity will ' make any man
strong among his fellows. His faith
ful service In the City Council was
truly an Index to his patriotic feel
ing toward his own people. Recogni
tion of that service was accented by
the formal attendance of tho Council
in a body at his funeral.
As to his lodge work, everv Pat
riarch knew him so well in that ca
pacity that any extended recital of
it here is superfluous. To Odd Fel
lowship the passing away of so wise
and so good n man, at his compar
atively early age, is a loss beyond
conception. When he had a duty to
perrorm he prepared himself nnd did
It cheerfully, wisely nnd well. We
heartily commend the noble. ambition
and rnlthful persevering service
which advanced him step by step
until he had reached the exalted po
sition of Crnnd High Priest of the
(Iraud Encampment, I, 0. 0. F. of
Oregon, and in less than another
year would have gained for him the
highest office in the gift of that
Grand Hody.
According to the ways of men the
spirit has taken (light to rest else
where, as to the dust the familiar
form Is assigned. The spirit hns
gone to its God, only the memory of
the one and the moral force of the
other remaining with us. The strong
er ties in the home being severed
makes the loss there felt more keen
ly than can elsewhere be realized, ex
cept by those whose hearts have been
pierced by the same sharp sword of
death. We can speak tho tender
word of comfort, shed the tear of
sincere sympathy, but we cannot
banish the shadow of our loss. Yet
through the rifted clouds the sun
beams of hope have pencilled on the
horizon of our lives the prospect that'
we shall meet again. This Is
pecfally comforting to the sorrowing
wife and loving children. Realizing
all this, be It therefore
