OAKLAND NOTES.
A braes band has been organized
at Oakland, with 15 pieces, Harve J.
Mahoney, director.
The Oakland Development league
has commenced the work of getting
up iin agricultural exhibit for next
year's state fair. It is hoped that
other towns in Douglas county will
fall into line.
The Messick orchard at Oakland
has shipped seven carloadB of pears
and one of prunes, and several cars
of apples will be shipped from the
orchard during the present seaBon.
This fruit Is all from what was two
years ago a much neglected orchard.
but the present owner applied mod
ern horticultural methods and has
brought the trees to a stage of bear
ing a fine grade of commercial
fruit.
The fruit growers of Oakland have
organized under the name of the
Calapoola Pruit-GrowerB' association.
and filed articles of incorporation
with the secretary of state.
The Phoenix Stone company near
Oakland has a large force of men
getting out a fine quality of build
ing stone. The output at present is
three carloads per day. The capac
ity of the plant will be enlarged In
the near future.

Rather than make a defense
against a hopeless contest, A. S.
Frey, the local grocer, this morning
withdrew his application at the unit- ,

over 4,000,000 feet of timber and Is

the forerunner of a number or con
