Geo. Draper, of Elberton, Wash,
which won a first prize in the Port
land show, was purchased by .Mr.
Hinkle and added to his herd, in
turn he sold a prize-winning bull to
Mr. Draper. The Hinkle herd of
ned Polled cattle is doubtless one ol
the best in the Pacific Northwest,
and under his personal carj it is
Improving right along and winning
an Increased number of prizes each
succeeding year. The lied Polled
breed occupies a high position among
what is known as "dual purpose"
cattle that is to say they nre valu
able both for dairying and as beef
stock. Such a combination Is es
pecially favorable for fanners who,
while producing some beef animals,
also require productive dulrylng
stock.
Sir. Alley Won 22 Prizes.
Also of special interest to Doug
las county is the splendid record
made by F. E. Alley's blooded
horses at the Salem and Portland
livestock exhibitions. Since his re
turn Mr. Alley has been showing to
hia friends 22 fine premium badges,
representing his winnings in the
competitions as above stnted. Two
of these are championship badges,
and one-third of the remainder rep
resent first premiums. This is a
remarkably fine showing, consider
ing the fact that there were on ex
hibition horses not only from all the
Pacific Coust states, but from the
east ns well, including imported
stock.
Important Horse Kale.
The beautiful German Coach stal
lion Modell, owned by 11. K. Denr
dorff. of Ouklnnd, has been left by
him at Myrtle Creek, where a com
pany is being formed for the pur
pose of purchasing him, the nego
tiations therefor being already well
advanced. The people of that com
munity are to be commended for
their appreciation and enterprise in
securing such a splendid animal.
This horse was put in tho show clr
culta in Belgium and Germany lie
fore being brought to this country,
and won first premiums among the
best horses shown there, which
means the best in the world. A coll
sired by him was imported to tliii--
country as a young horse and sold
for tho splendid sum of JlttiOO.
Since he was owned by Mr. Denidorff
the headquarters of this horse has
been at Oakland, making regular
trips from there to Roseburg. We
are glad to learn that the service of
this valuable sire will be available
to Roseburg territory during the
season of 1909. as he will come here
from the south instead of north as
heretofore.
To such enterprising livestock men
as Messrs. Hinkle, Alley and Dear
dorff, in their respective 'lines, Doug
las county is under Insting obliga
tions, as each has some of the very
best blooded stock that can be
found nnywhere, either at home or
abroad.
