upon taking up his work for Glass
& I'rudlionime. of Portland, on Oc
tober 1, he will be assigned to terri
tory In the state of Washington, in-
i stead of Montana, as formerly re
ported. He will have all the eastern
part of the state as well as the west
ern portion as. far as Olympia. This
is a splendid territory, which will
enable Mr. Agee to make his head
quarters In Portland, all of which is
verv gratifying.
George Putnam, the agrcssivc edit

ago. following his arrest-'on a war
rant charging him with libel, was
assaulted on (he streets of Medford
Tuesday by Earl Jackson, son of ex
Sberiff Jackson, of Jackson county.
Putnam had incurred the enmity of
vnuiig Jnckson by severely criticising
him for stringing up a prisoner by
the wrists while a deputy under his
father. Putnam was not seriously
hurt in the assault, his Injuries con
sisting of some Inconsequential
bruises about the face.

COQUILLE, Or., Sent. 21. Mr.
?ox, the aged father of Wm. Cox, of
Marshtleld. and Mrs. Chas. Wlckhaiu,
of Coquille, dropped dead at the
Wickham home here Saturday after
noon. Mr. Cox had been in poor
health for sotne time and had become
agitated over his sou's suit for dam
ages from the local railroad for in
juries sustained in an accident a few
months ago. Mr. Cox showed a
keen interest In the case while .Lhe
jury was out and a moment after he
heard the verdict, dropped dead of
heart failure. Mr. Cox was recently
brought to Coquille from his home
uear Hoseburg.
Mr. Cox was awarded ?1000 by
the Jury. He Bucd for $30,000,
claiming that he had been perman
ently disabled by the accident, which,
Uie alleged, was due to the company's
negligence. The Jury was 0111 uuoui
twelve hours.
(The deceased is believed to bev
Isoni Cox, a former resident of Ten
Milo and later of Olnlla. Mr. Cox
went to Coquille about 25 years ago
and remained permanently, whereus
the Coquille dispatch says he recent
ly came there from this city, which

Richardson, and Mrs. Evelyn Ramp.
of Cottage Grove, who has been vls-
itiug at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
F. H. Churchill, In this city, for
several days past, met with an acci
dent and both were injured, the lady
quite seriously. The accident hap-
liened about 8 o clock at or near a
bridge spanning a small culvert, op
posite the ltooth Bros.' place, about
100 yards south of the entrance to
the District Fair grounds. .
A patent clasp, connecting the
tongue of the buggy with the front
axle gave away, frightening the
horses into a runaway. The bugg
was overturned at the culvert and its
occupants were thrown out with
great force. Mrs. Kamp sustained a
fracture of her right collar bone, two
parallel cuts on her forehead and
an ugly gash, six inches long, imme
diately below her left knee. Mr.
Fullerton'B Injuries consist of a
wrenched back and a slightly bruised
elbow.
While Mrs. Ramp was removed to
the llooth home, Mr. Fullerton went
to a nearby residence and telephoned
for Dr. Seely. who arrived a tew
minutes later with Grant Tnylor In
tho lnlter's automobile. Both Mr
Fullerton and Mrs. Itnmp were
brought to town In the machine and
today are receiving proper care and
attention
The injury to Mrs. Rnmp's collar
bone is an unusually severe one. Dr.
Seely states that it Is splintered and
for that reason will bo longer in
honling than If it wore a elenn
break. While Mrs. Ramp's recovery
Is niovely a matter of time, it will
be longer than undor ordinary cir
cumstances, owing to the fact that
she recently underwent an operation
for appendicitis, from which she had
not regained her full former
strength.
The buggy suffered lltllo or 111

mile before stopping. Neither anl

A Paying Investment,
EL PASO, Tex., Sept. 22. George
Clurk, a negro, Bhot Constable W.
H. Taylor, who attempted to arrest
him at Shero, Texas, last night, and a
mob hanged the negro to a tree, leav
ing him for dead. This morning he
was found to be still alive and was
aken to a jail, where a second mob
Is now threatening to take him and
ilisish the work, of the first.
The rope with which the negro had
in some manner slipped and the
mauB toes touched the ground. Ills
ham's were tied behind hlin and he
could not move.
He became unconscious, but when
nut down this morning be revived in
a short time.

pletely wrecking the after turret and
killing outright the entire gun crew
of 13 men. A number of men were
seriously Injured, some of them
probably fatally.
