His first onslaught wan delivered
at Harrington, a town of 2500 peo
ple, but whose population was aug
mented by thousands of others who
had been attracted there by the pres
ence of the democratic leader. To
night ho repeated his utterances at
Shell Pot park to a throng which tax
ed the capacity of the place.
While In this city Bryan was the
guest at dinner of Judge George
Gray. Mr. Bryan will leave In tin
morning at 6:30 o'clock on his spe
cial over the Pennsylvania railroad
for New York, reaching thero about
9 o'clock. He will spend the entire
day conferring with hlo party leaders
concluding at night with a speech at

gon State Kiiual Suffrage Associa
tion yesterday tiled petitions with
the secretary of state for a new wo
man's stiff rave election. The prln
clple upon which the cant pal km will
bo carried on Is that the right to
vote should be given all women pav
ing taxes on either real or personal
property. This procedure was un
dertaken for the purpose of oiening
an issue for an active campaiKii of
reorganltathui. The matter will be
submitted to the voters nt the No
vember election In 1910.
In all previous woman's suffrage
elections the effort has been to ob
tain the suffrsge of women under the
same conditions as Is enjoyed by
men. The present petition Is unique
In that It asks for the miff rase of)
women taxpayers only and Is the first
time that such a measure has been
presented In this state.

The livestock parade took place
this forenoon. Heretofore the par
ade has been held on a small track
east of the pavilion. This year the
crowd of spectators was so great that
it was necessary to conduct the pa
rade on the racetrack.
The breaking of the Lone Oak
track trotting record occurred In the
2:14 trot for the Lewis and Clark
purse of $r00. The previous record
wub that of U. Ambush, 2:11 Ji-4 In
1907. The record was broken In the
first heat of the a: 14 trot today,
when Joe McGulre's Day Break made
the mile In 2:11. In the second
heat the same horse reduced the
record to 2:1014.
In the first race, the 3-year-old
pace, K. 8. Train s Kay o Light re
duced the Oregon record for J-year-
olds from 2:10 3-4 to 2:0iM4. In
the 2: 10 pace Josephine won In three
straight heuts; time 2:00.
Forest Hose won the 3-4-iuile dash
in 1:14 3-4.
The first prize for a county exhibit
was won by Benton, which county al

having drawn the attention of the
world to his aeroplane flights at Fort
Slyer and having established new
world's records lor heavier-than-nlr
llyiug machines, Orvllle Wright todny
met with a tragical mishap while
making a two-man lllght. The aero
planist was accompanied by Lieut.
Thomas E. Selfridge. of the Signal
Corps of the Army. Lieut. Selfridge
was fatally Injured and died tonight.
Mr. Wright was not dangerously
injured. He is suffering from a ma
ture of his left thigh and several ribs
on the right side are fractured, llo.ii

head. The. blade on one of the pro
pellors broke on the liitli turn
around the field, and the machine
turned over So feet in the air, land
ing on both men.
