law passed by the last legislature of

Thomas Jones, who owns a big ranch
on San Juan Island, is nlso the own
er of a pair of collies, male and fe
male, which no money can buy.
About a mouths ago the female dis
appeared and for several days a
search was kept up for her, but with
out avail. Ho came to the conclu
sion that she had been poisoned or
stolen.
Last week Mr. Jones killed a sheep
and tossed a large bone to the other
collie. Justead of gnawing It he pick
ed It up and started for the woods
looking back, apparently to see if he
was followed.
Mr. Jones decided to follow him.
The dog trotted along for about
mile, and stopped at the mouth of an
abandoned well. Dropping the bone,
he barked and a muffled bark was
heard In reply. Then the dog pick
ed up the bone and dropped It over
the edge Into the well. Mr. Jones
got a ladder and climbing down Into
the well found the lost collie at the
bottom, enjoying the meal her mate
had Just brought her.
There was only a couple of In dies
of water In the well, but the lost dog
would certainly have starved to death
had It not been for the other dug,
which had brought her food for 24
days, the length of time she had been

Woman .Married in Koseburg Sues for
Divorce in Eugeuw.
Eugene Guard: Mrs. Amanda Mix-
son today began suit iu the circuit
court against her hiiKbaud, Jack
Illxsou, for divorce, charging cruel
and inhuman treatment. Site alleges
that at one time he destroyed their
marriage certificate by burning It,
that at various and numerous times
he cursed her and called her vile and
indecent names, falsely accused her
of being unchaste and unfaithful to I
him, but tho worst of all is, so she
alleges, that he compelled her to
work in the hay and harvest field,
while she was in a delicate condi
tion, compelling her to shock hay and
bundles of grain and to do other
hard work, causing her great phy
sical suffering, iniiairing her health
and endangering her life.
Id her complaint, Mrs. Hfxson savB
they were married at Koseburg on
May 3, 1892, aud they have three
minor children, William Iester, aged
13; Clifford, aged It, and Freddy,
aged 6. She asks for the custody of
the last named. J. C. Johnson is
attorney for the plaintiff.
