William Peacock has refused an
offer of $15,000, says an Albany spe
cial, for 19 acres of land lying In
Heuton county, Juut acrouB the Wil
lamette river from Albany. He paid
$116 an acre for the tract 26 years
go. This Is one of the highest
prices ever offered In the Willamette
Valley for land for agricultural pur
poses and it Is probably the very
highest price for a tract of similar
size. Its wealth lies In Its possibil
ities for successful garden culture,
and there are other gardon tracts ly
ing near the Peacock place which are
probably almost as valuable
The fact that Peacock can afford
to refuse an offer of nearly $1000 an
acre makes apparent the big Income
It produces. Incidentally the offer
shows the rapid Increase In prices
for desirable agricultural land In
the vicinity of Albany and other
growing cities of the Willamette
Valley.
WRHT VIRGINIA CAMPAIGN.
CHARLESTON, W. Va., Sept. 12.
Republicans from all over West
Virginia are thronging Charleston to
day, attracted by the opening meet
ing of the republican campaign. West
Virginia Is this year looked upon as
debatable ground, and both parties
will engage In a vigorous contest for
the victory.
Mr. Bryan's West Virginia address
..has enthused the democrats, but the
republican leaders asHert that o
dozen speeches by the NehrnHkiin
would not be sufficient to overcome
Taft's personal popularity in the
state. Mr. Taft hus persistently re
fused to take any purt In the fac
tional disputes of the West Vlrglnln
republicans, and thlfl has added to
his popularity with the rank and file
of the voters, who are little Inttmmt
ed In the qunrrels of the party lead
ers. It Is stated today that complete
harmony prevails In the ranks f the
party and that the West Virginia re
publicans will present a solid front
to "tho enemy" In the campaign Just
opening.
IlKCKPTION FOR -IHtYAN.
ROCHESTER, N. Y.. Sept. 12.
Rochester democrats will give a glor

when he arrives here next Wednes

shadowing the Interest in the demo
cratic state convention, which opens
here Tuesday. An Imposing program
has been prepared for Bryan day and
there will be many hands and demo
cratic marching clubs to greet the
party- standard-bearer.

The main difficulty arose when Attorney-General

The system has proved a wonder

SALEM. Or., Sept. II. The con

the several counties of Oregon closed
this afternoon.
The most Important mutters
brought before the convention were
the raising and apportioning of
school fundB. In discussing these
questions the convention unanimous
ly Indorsed the recommendations of
the special committee, of the State
Teachers' Association ut the sohhIoii

To Auk Legislature for Relief.
The State Teachers' Associnlion
:ommtttee took the position that
so i no plan should be devised whereby
the Irreducible state school fund
-ould be enlarged sulllclently so that
t, together with the county fund,
would Insure not less than six
nonths of school for each district in
he state.
They proposed that the legislature
e asked to provide two forms of re
lief: First, a temporary relief be
laced In the statu school fund for
ise each year and a portion of the
umls now raised through Indirect
axatlon, the amount to be gradually
finished as the permanent fund In

Change In Dividing FiiihIh.
The committee also recommended
1 change In the basis of apportion
