WASHINGTON. Sept. 5. An ex
tra session of congress will certainly
be held immediately on the adjourn
ment of the regular session.
This statement was made today
by Senator MeCumber, of North Da
kota, who has Just come to Washing
ton after conferences with the presi
dent and Mr. Taft on this subject.
Not only will the extra session be
held, the senator said, but the tariff
will be revised.
"Among the Important articles
which the west will demand shall be
placed on the free list," said Senator
MeCumber, "are lumber and coal. A
fight will be made to conserve the
raw materials that enter into the
manufactures by putting them on the
free list. The effort Is to be made
to put on the free list such articles
as Iron, lumber and coal, the con
slant consumption of which tends to
exhaust the supply."
Residents of the great northwest
have hitherto bitterly opposed sug
gestions looking to free lumber but
It Is the opinion of Senator MeCum
ber that In regions where lumber is
fast becoming scarce the idea is be
coming fixed that If the American
markets could be opened to the Can
adian lumber supply there would be
a material reduction In prices.
Although he does not share the
o pi n fon that such a reduction in
price would follow the admission of
free lumber, Mr. MeCumber does
think that many evils could be
avoided by taking that commodity
from the dutiable list and it will be
his purpose to support this policy In
the senate this winter when the extra
session Is railed
So far as the east is- concerned,
Mr. MeCumber Is of the opinion that
manufacturers In that section will
also make a great effort to get wool
and hides on the free list. This, he
said, the west would undoubtedly
oppose with all its power.
"It is my opinion," the senator
said, "that we shall be In Washing
ton nil spring and possibly a good
part of the summer if the eastern
and western interests fight each
other In the extra session."

thousands of acres in St. Louis,

nesota, and the north portion of
Douglas county. Wisconsin, the many

In these districts were checked today,
and If the wind does not spring up
ngain, it is not likely that further
damage will be great.
The lire subsiding enabled the In
habitants of Buhl and Neshwauk tu
save these towns.
Chisholm presents a scene of ruin
and desolation. The only buildings
remaining are the new $125,000 high
school, the grade school, the Cath
olic church, the Italian church nnd a
dozen dwellings in the southernmost
parts of the town, which were saved
by a few heroic lire lighters who
stuck to their posts In the face of
(he cyclonic onslaught of the (lames
and smoke.

at $500,000. The total number of
people rendered homeless will reach
12,000 and vast tracts of agricultural
lauds have also been devastated.
