Throughout Russia preparations nr i
lug forward for great demonstra
tions on the occasion of the MUh I
birthday of Count J.eo Tolstoi, tin-
great "torch bearer." which falls on
next Friday. The Union of True Rub- i
sian people, composed principally of j
priests and reactionaries who are
anxious to preserve the despotic re
gime in the land of the czar, are
threatening a counter demonstration.
The authorities fear trouble may
suit from clashes between the ad
mirers and enemies of Tolstoi.
Tolstoi recently Issued a condem
natory creed, directed at the Russian
government and church, in which he
depicted In words that burned the
terrible conditions now existing In
this unhappy country, and which
have transformed the empire into
jne vast slaughter pen. This article,
entitled. "I Cannot be Silent." dem
onstrated the truth of the assertion
that Tolstoi is the only Russian who
dares to tell the truth. More pow-
rful even than the czar, and with
the public opinion of all civilized na
tions behind htm, me venerium-

The Orthodox church dignitaries

nriests will read prayers beseeching
the deity to turn Tolstoi "from hh
evil ways" and to bring about his re
turn to the church. This action 01
the church is the subject of much
scoffing in all of the more independ
nt iournuls of the empire, most 01
which are agnostic in tendency, since
the church has always taken siuob
with despotism.
