Portland Journal: The movement
for good roadH Is a world movement.
The Kood roads campaign uow being
launched In Oregon is almost at the
rear end of the proeentfion. We hint

1905 the state of New York author

338.. miles were wholly built by the
stute, and 4700 of minor connecting
roads were built, of which hulf the
cost was borne by the state. Penn
sylvania has appropriated $8,000,
000, Indiana the same amount, and
Maryland $fi,000,000 for state-built
roads. On the Pin: I lie coast Califor

not long ago the people of Loh An

Matinees every afternoon at The
Miss llina Ifmstead left this morn
ing for Portland to visit with friends.
A new epoch in UoHeburg'u his
tory was Inaugurated Friday even
ing. August 21. 108, when the city
council voted unanimously to award
a contract for 18 blocks of bltullthlc
street puvlng, work upon which Is
to be commenced within ten days.
At that Hume session $:'.-'. 0011 worth
of city bonds were sold ut face value
for the payment of one-half of the
cost of this splendid Improvement.
The Review takes special pride In
this ruvorable outcome of Its earnest
ly fought campaign for an Improve
ment that will go farther than any
previous movement toward making
a greater Itoseburg. Last September,
The Heview first began urging the
necessity for street puvlng in Hose
burg. When the October financial
flurry came on the matter wuh drop
ped temporarily. In January It was
resumed In an earnest wuy and the
city council, noting the feasibility
and need for such an Improvement In
our city, took up the mutter at their
first meeting In February. Public
sentiment heartily backed up thetr
uctlon, with' the result that nearly
200 enthusiastic street paving boost

to Investigate the street paving thai
had been laid in that city a short
time previous. All returned home
wit h the slogan: "Koseburg must
have paved streets." The city bond
ing election followed In April and
about 88 per cent of the votes cast
were In fuvor of the paving. Step by
step the necessary legal formalities
were compiled with, but not a single
rormal protest was tiled when the
streets were advertised for paving.
The climax came when the city coun
cil ut one meeting Bold the bonds and
awarded the paving contract by a
unanimous vote.
While formal opposition to the
paving has not appeared on the sur
face, there has nevertheless been a
strong light waged against it, requir
ing constant vigilance on the part of
those actively favoring this Improve
ment. Every move or urgument
against the pavtug was promptly met
and refuted. The Oily News, which
has gained the distinction of being
the mayor's personal organ, and
which from time to time has osten
sibly been giving nominal support to
the street paving movement, at the
Crucial moment showed Its real posi

time the present year's systematic
boosting would have practically
come to naught. It Is more than
probable that the Commercial Club
would have disbanded and the con
tract for their tine new headquarters
annulled. The Club's Uooster would
have been discharged and the thous
ands of dollars, already spent In ad
vertising Douglas county abroad
would have only been wasted, as peo
ple coming here and finding streets
resembling muddy lanes would do &b
many others huve done In the past
go elsewhere on the very next train.
It Is movements of vital Import
ance, like this one, which show who
the town's real friends are, and The
Kcvlew again desires to express Its
satisfaction at having led to a suc
cessful termination this action for
street paving, which we believe will
do more to attract population, capital
and business than any other one
thing that has hitherto been accom
plished. Koseburg, like other towns
of its class, needs many things In the
way of Improvement. Its greatest
need paved streets Is now to bo
supplied just as soon as the work
can be done. Other improvements
are bound to rapidly follow. The
I spirit of progress has found a home
among us, and for every advance
movement hereafter will be heard
the slogan: "I-O IT NOW!"

The bridge was unlit about 12 year

consisting of loose rock encased in

a threshing machine had passed over
the bridge Thursday evening it began
swaying and final v went down. Th

foundation. County .fudge Wona

I here has already been decided
for the foundation some new metal

practically immovable base for the
bridge.- More iron will also be used
in the frame of the structure, which
will be about 2HD feet over all in
length. It is estimated that the
work will recjulre about two month;
