who cannot see the Standard Oil
Company of New Jersey in the Stand
ard Oil Company of Indiana, and who
cannot see through both of these le
gal fictions to the real owners and
the real offenders, John D. Rocke
feller, II. II. Rogers. John D. Arch
bold and others, is either blinded by
prejudice or by an unfortunate dispo
sition to obscure the merits of a con
rtoversy by strained and Irrelevant
technicalities," declared Attorney
General Herbert S. 1 lad ley, of Mis
souri, today, in his address before
the second annual convention of the
National Asoclation of Attorneys-Gen
erals, of which he Is president.
The statement was made in the
course of a review of the reversal by
the United States Circuit Court of
Appeals of the $2!), 240,000 line
which wns assessed against the
Standard Oil Company of Indiana by
Judge Lnudis, of the United States
District Court.
"To assert that men may, by the
organization of a puppet corporation
escape the proper measure of pun
ishment for their wrongdoing," con
tinued President Had ley, "Is to give
to the legal fiction of the corporation
greater rights, privileges nnd Immun
itles than-those which belong to nat
ural persons.
"This case shoutd serve as nn Im
pressive nrgument as to the necessity
of the national nnd state govern
ments enacting a law to the effect
that no Judgment In a criminal or
civil case should he reversed unless
the court can atllrmatlvely say upon
the entire record, that the judgment
will be for the wrong party, and that
but for the error complained of, a
different judgment would have been
rendered.
"The results secured, or rather.

Robert Laughlln, a laborer, about
50 years of ago, who has been In this
section for many years, went Insane
after rending "Higher Thought," for
some time, and a few days since con
ceived the Idea that God was com
manding him to cut off his left hand.
He proceeded to carry out the Imag
ined mnndate and with the aid of a
butcher knife nnd a hatchet he suc
ceeded In amputating his left hand at
the wrist. He haiked the hand In a
number of places before he succeed
ed in severing it, and it was in a very
badly mangled condition when he
was found whore be has been ll"lng
alone. He was taken In charge ly
physicians, who were compelled lo
take his urni off about midway be
tween the wrist and elbow. Ho will
be kept here until he recoverj and
